Yeah get a move on.... I drove mine outta the garage today:rockon:

Yeah yeah, whatever Peter I'll have mine MOT'd way before yours

Should check out his vids on youtube - search for woodsport!

I've seen them before, the more i watch the more i want to own one :D

Update for today, I went to pay a visit the infinitely talented Mr Keith Harlow or Keith5700 as he's known to you and me.

He quickly managed to alter the brass coupling to fit the 16mm fuel pipe for me and even drilled and tapped the other end to take a -8 connector which made life even easier. He did however force me into buying most of his shed again

I also had a family lunch and a christening to go to plus an old mate dropped by tonight so all in all i only got an hour on the car so back to work properly Monday night.

BUT I did manage to finish all the fuel piping on the tank to the pump and under the car. Just the tank and sender to wire up and we're done on the fuel side of things.

The pipework needs tidying up and hoseclips need fitting and a bracket fabbing up but that's the last bit done for the time being.

Both electric fans and the controller ready to fit

And a little purchase to make my life making brackets easier for £20 :D

Love the build. Cant wait to see her fired up! Had a 383 stroker in a little '67 Chevy Nova before I married the better half...amazing bottom end! What oil pan did you go with , did not see that posted? Did you use and adapter plate for the stock 5 speed tranny? Whos adapter did you go with? Again , love the build.

  • Author

Cheers buddy, the oil pan is a one off hand made jobby with a baffled wing on one side and i used a tremek tko500 with standard chevy bellhousing and a hydraulic slave ring inside.

I've only driven a 4.2 V8 XK8 so not entirely sure what to expect out of this in terms of pull, it's all solid mechincal so it should be pretty free revving :D

Ordering the water pipes tonight so fingers crossed should be all sorted by wednesday and ready to go.

Onto the gearbox tonight getting the shifter finished, gearbox bolted up and start making the new shifter mechanism :D

Thanks , just wondering. That seems to be the standard answer on the Oil pan. You should have more than enough with the 383 stroker. Mine I ran had a Turbo350 Auto behind it and I could go thru all 3 gears in about 20 yards if I wanted to.

  • Author

Yep all in all including the remote oil filter and oil cooler the system takes a total of 12 litres of oil! If i wasn't using the custom sub frame i would have tried to adapt a stock sump but it rides so low it'd just take the sump plug out on the first bump in the road

I can't wait to see what happens when I put that foot down for the first time! :hyper:

Well update for tonight isn't a huge amount really. I ordered the pipes tonight at a grand total of £108 for all silicone bends and ally joiners (!) and they should arrive tomorrow before lunch :D Put the gearbox selector back in place and bolted the gearbox mounts up tight again and prop back on.

I've faced the fact i'm not going to get the car started before it leaves on Friday morning so just focussing on getting all the other jobs finished off like bolting the engine in tight, gearbox and prop in 100% so i don't have to get under the car again when i get it back or remove the exhaust to reach anything.

I need to fix the locking mechanism so i can at least lock it on the key when it gets up there. I'll get all the water pipes in place and engine filled with coolant, belts tensioned and radiator mounted up 100%.

I'll seal the head bolts and mount the rocker covers up and connect all fuel and vacuum pipes up too. So all that needs doing when it comes back is the fuel tank adaptions i need to do and i'll be ready to start :hyper:

I started work on tidying the garage

  • Author

Well i did write a long update yesterday but annoyingly i hit the wrong key and page refreshed and lost everything :headvswal

Basic jist is the engine is complete, headbolts are now sealed and rockers lashed. Rocker covers are on, carb is on and all vacuum ports sealed and ready to use, Belts and pulleys are all reconnected and torqued up.

Spark plugs are in, headers are in place with the spare gaskets until i know for sure if i'll be using them or if exhausts uk can make me up the full system in 3" stainless.

It's off tomorrow morning first thing to sheffield on the trailer then I won't see it for a week

But when it does come back i've just got to cut and join the silicon pipes and we're ready to start it! :hyper:

The money shot :D

Hollings.

Haha, not long now buddy! :D I'll have a BBQ to celebrate once it's all together and worth getting you over to look at. A week till it comes back then just the last few jobs to do (including having an alarm fitted so i can unlock the doors from outside!) then i'll be inviting you all round :hyper:

Have you connected the PCV Nick?(it looks like it in the pic)

I have matey, just to check that the pipe is the right diameter then i have to get the valve to spin round a bit more to make it fit and look tidy. Spark plugs are in and just water pipes to do when it gets back.

Is an odd combination of the both, the secondaries are controlled by the throttle but also have a vacuum system that smooths it out so should be quite useful to get it running economically (hahahahah) for cruising with bags of power when i boot it :D

To quote real steel:

This carburetor is very similar to the Carter AFB from the 60’s. It has a square bore flange like most Holley’s. The secondary throttle blades are mechanically operated and don’t start to open until the primary throttle blades have opened about 65%. Airflow through the secondaries is controlled by a weighted flapper-type air door called the auxiliary air valve, which prevents the carb from bogging down when the accelerator is floored at low speed. As air velocity through the carb increases, the valve is pulled open, allowing the secondaries to operate fully. Similar result to a vacuum secondary, but achieved using a different method. Float levels are factory set, although the fuel pressure must be correct.

Changing jets, can be achieved without the need to drain the fuel from the unit. Like Holley, an installation DVD comes with a recently manufacted carbs. The Thunder series of carbs is fitted with an adjustable valve secondary which allows for simple & accurate tuning across the rpm range.

Well an update for you, Thursday night brought the range rover back from work (kindly lent to me by my mate at work) then picked the trailer up in the evening which was in a real state, nothing worked, light was hanging off the side and half the bulbs had blown.

So spent 2 hours making brackets and drilling/pop riveting and bolting things in place! Stripped the door cards off the zed to put the linkage in on the passenger side only to find the lock barrel didn't match the key so had to take the driver's side door apart to get the lock barrel, switched the mechanism over over to find as soon as i turned the key, the plastic linkage snapped and that put an end to that :( So they're going to have to store the car at exhausts uk indoors while it's up there.

Finally finished making number plates up and get the car ready to go at 1.30am.

4.30am i got back up and started work getting the car loaded up (i bet the neighbours love me!) and found although we could JUST get the car on with the alloys on it was so tight we ended up fitting 2 stock wheels and two spares to give us plenty of room.

Finally got it loaded up on the trailer and ready to go by 7am and set off to sheffield.

Arrived at 9am with no dramas and had a chat and catch up with Pete who had a look round the car to work out what they could do with the parts of the exhaust i already had.

What it looks like is going to happen is they're going to replace the back boxes with something similar to below with turned out lips and quad (in keeping with the stock zed exhausts) and use the centre section and silensors then make a complete new manifold for the driver's side to fit over the steering column rather than try and squeeze it past the starter motor and power steering pipes.

attachment.php?attachmentid=55733&stc=1&d=1282389467

So all in all it should be complete by next friday for us to go and collect the car. Can't wait to get it back now and i'll be itching to get the last couple of pipes connected up and get the car fired up for the first time :D

More to come as I get there folks :)

Morning all, well it's been a quiet week all in all. I needed a bit of a break off the project to get the feeling back in my fingers and get my back straight again

Plus i've had my hand forced with the car being up in Sheffield but it's coming home tomorrow :hyper:

I'm off about 10ish tomorrow to drive up to sheffield and pick it back up on the trailer then i've got the whole day booked off to get it ready to start.

Jobs list for tomorrow is as follows:

  • Tension up belts and followers on the front of the engine
  • Fit the radiator properly
  • Fit all water pipes in place
  • Fit and hook up electric fan and controller before setting a rough temp cut in with a heat gun
  • Screw in lambda sensor to passenger manifold
  • Hook up temp sender and oil pressure sender
  • Hook up earth cable to starter motor casing
  • Hook up alternator wire
  • Prime the engine and bearings with the drill attachment
  • Run temporary power on a switch to both the distributor and the fuel pump
  • Find top dead centre on cylinder 1 and then align the capless distributor to position one and crimp/hook up all spark leads/plugs/boots
  • Fill up with fuel
  • Turn the key! :scooter: :punk:
  • Get revs up to 2k and hold for 20 mins to break the cam in
  • Additional tuning (e.g. re-jetting, mixture adjustment etc)
  • Fill gearbox, diff and bleed brakes (possibly swap callipers for the willwoods while i'm at it)
  • Roll it out the garage under it's own steam and see what happens! :D

I won't get it all done tomorrow unless i'm in there till god knows what time plus i don't really want to be breaking in a 6.3 litre engine at 2k at 2am unless I want an asbo

I reckon by Saturday lunchtime we should be about ready for the first start on the key (well button in engine bay anyway! lol)

Exciting times are ahead boys and girls! :hyper:

  thats awesome Nick, really looking forward to hearing it!

Its probably the least of your troubles, but I thought the same with my passenger door lock, but I took the barrel out and removed the tumblers, cleaning and rebuilding it and now it works perfectly. Maybe a winter job for you lol (unless it is actually the wrong key!)

Cheers buddy :D It's pretty dead if it is the lock barrel. Titanium key works fine on the other barrel but not this one but tbh i'm going to do away with the lock barrels completely when i get the alarm fitted next week, smooth off the handle surrounds completely and respray. Loads of little jobs to do including spraying and fitting the sideskirts and the new 95 spec spoiler i've got :)

Really happy for you Bud!!! It's been an interesting journey!!

Andy

Cheers Andy, as soon as i've got it started i'll be uploading the vid that day so fingers crossed that'll either be tomorrow evening or saturday if i'm delayed (and believe me i'm expecting something to take some time as always!)

Cheers buddy, i had unfortunately planned to take the other half away for a weekend's break camping on Saturday for 2 days but if the weather's this bad we might not be able to go and we'll have to save it for another weekend - oh no! :innocent:

  • Author

Well it's back! :hyper: Exhaust looks great, just the look i was looking for - not too OTT and try to keep it quad like the stock exhaust but with a bit more umph :)

I was so excited i woke up at half 6, drove 30 miles to work to pick up the range rover from my mate at work then headed back, picking up the trailer on the way. Eventually set off at half 10 after fixing the broken indicator on the connector.

After being stuck in a massive tailback on the M1 reached sheffield and went and saw what they guys at Exhausts UK had done for me. Fantastic job!

I gave them 1 and a half manifolds, part of a centre section with the hushpower 2 centre silensors and the x flow attached and the home made back boxes that keith had made with the mini resonator boxes intact.

I wasn't even sure if they could use everything but they've done it! They've welded shiny new outward rolled 3" tips on the box, welded some clamp plates on the ends, even managed to keep the mini resonator boxes and silencers with 2 1/2" bore all the way through.

The manifold they've managed to fit with a space around the starter motor so no more overheating problems :)

The ride height is going to be a real issue with this car. On stock and spare wheels it only has about 2 inches clearance so i have a feeling i might just have to put stock springs on the front to bring the ride height back up again.

I'll have to put the 18" wheels back on again and see what happens but i'm sure it rode higher before i took the wheels off(?)

Anyway on with the photos :)

When you said your mate lended you a range rover I was expecting an old shitty one lol

Oh christ no, this is 3 litre V6 twin turbo diesel with 22" rims PIIIIIIIIIIIMP

Bloody horrible thing, like driving on a step ladder but can't deny it's fast, comfy and pulls like a trooper even with a 1200kg car on the back :)

Onto working on the engine tomorrow! Let's get this baby started :)
