Okay, driveway finished and time to make a decision.

I had a good long think while i was laying the 1600 blocks yesterday (it was a very long day!) and thought about logically what could be done.

The shell and the interior are in good nick and everything's been done so i don't really want to part with it because the car looked great.

The chevy has proven to be a very tricky engine to get working in the shell and i can't really afford to invest any more into the project so i've decided i'm going to pull the engine and sell it either whole or as parts to get back as much money from the project as I can.

Once i've got the money back in the bank then i'll decide which way to go. I should be looking in the region of £5000-6000 for all the chevy parts i'd get back from breaking it but £3500-4000 if I sell it whole. I'll put the word out to the guys at rev it in solihull to see if they can find anyone looking for that spec of engine.

I'll keep the adapter plates and spacers in a box in case i get the urge to do it again along with the manifolds or if anyone makes me the right offer i might sell the lot to them good price.

Bearing in mind i've spent £16k on the build and it only needs a grand to get the engine balanced to eliminate the rockers loosening off and a plug putting in the bottom of the block where i forgot to do it i think £6k isn't a bad price for everything including the gearbox and prop shaft ready to bolt in.

I'll put it in the for sale section when i get back with a detailed spec.

Whatever money i have left from it will go into getting it running one way or another so i'll keep you updated.

Cheers for all your support on the project guys i'm just sorry i can't get it finished but needs must unfortunately.

Well driveway is done so room for a couple of zeds on there now - don't worry i hadn't forgotten guys :) Just need to sort out the garden (ie get the mower working) and i'll get the invites up :D

Well i have 2 options: If i fit a zed lump back in it'll be a modded NA lump again - i never really got on with the TT personally it always felt a bit like driving a big rubber band.

The second i'm keep quiet on for the time being until i see how much money i get back but let's just say it could be equally as special and a much quicker build to get working ;)

That was one option but it requires alot of fabbing to getting it to work.

Let's just say i've had a word with someone on the phone today about a possible option that would just require bolting in and an ecu setting up.... ;)

Ooo, is it an LS by any chance?

Maybe an LS7, perhaps? :gunsmilie:

Still can't believe you're pulling the plug on your current engine - but that's your decision bud. Let's hope you have a little better luck with your next idea and get a good return on your present lump..

LS FTW!

Can't wait to find out what your gunna put in there.

WTF is an LS? lol

LS6/7 is this:

...but no not an LS7 unfortunately.

I won't be starting it until the end of the summer now but in the meantime i'll be putting my old silver NA back on the road for the summer so i'll see you at the meets in the next couple of weeks :)

We'll see, i have to get the money back from breaking the engine first but that's possibly the way i'm going.

Had a brief word with John Dixon about it yesterday and if the kit's still available in a few months then i'll take it off his hands. I need to get rid of all the chevy parts first to get the money in the bank then i'll decide what to drop in it.

The other option is 6-7 grand to spend on a TT engine and for that sort of money i could be pushing 400-450bhp reliably if i get it built by someone like jimmer.

Shame to hear your going to break mate but if its for the best. At least you can sell what you have done so far!

Nissan v8 would also be very cool!

I've learnt my lesson about building engine's - leave it to the pros otherwise you just end up losing £9k of your hard earned money :(

So whatever i do i'll be buying a solid known engine and bolting it in whether 6 or 8 cylinders :)

V12 anyone? lol

Well I was going to say, BMW do do some fab engines ;) Nice BMW V8 underthere with supercharger... or one of the v12's although the earlier v12's are not really great engines IMHO, the 5l and 5.4 were single cam affairs, not much more powerful than the much more efficient and technically advanced V8's. However the 6.0 Direct injection 440bhp monster in the E65 was a nice bit of a kit (I will add the 5.4/6?? from the 850csi was a DOHC unit at 380bhp and was worthy!) Again if you have deep pockets the twin turbo v12 in the new 760i... at 540bhp or so!!!

I want an easy life buddy, the only reason for considering the kit Jon has access to is the fact all the adapters, mounts and engineering are done apart from remounting the rad and the pipework which i have no problem doing but after 3 years trying to make an engine fit where's it's not supposed to i'd rather just bolt it in, fit the pipes and actually drive it :)

With an emerald running it i can then have different maps for drag racing, fast road and motorway cruising which i couldn't do with the carb.

V12 would be lovely especially the BMW one but i can't afford to waste another 3 years on the car now especially with no garage :(

Yeah I know mate, just being silly :) Get johns kit bought. I would have loved to have done but:

A: Not Brave enough

B: Now very poor after buying house

C: Really barely have the time to eat at the minute with trying to juggle a complex job, family, and a house renovation!

  • Author

Ah you see:

A: I'm stupid enough to try it

B: I'm also poor after buying a house hence i have to sell all the parts first and budget properly if i do it

C: Same here so i haven't the time to be cutting and getting stuff welded and fiddling around making stuff fit when someone else has already done the hardest work for me and done it properly

Really sorry to see it hasn't worked out Nick. The build has been quite a roller coaster of ups and downs.

I reckon the V8 kit option from John sounds like a good investment. Although I hope its not the one Im thinking off......as I know that sold 2 weeks ago.

Quavey, blimey - ours is a bit simpler than that but the driveway has been a hell of a job to do ourselves but came in at just over £1700 instead of the £3000-3500 we were quoted.

I'll pop some photos up in a bit on the forum (if i still have access to the non-zed related discussion!)

Cheers buddy, it's been a learning experience and a half and I don't regret a second of it. Ultimately though it has taught me i should have bought a crate engine in the first place but when you've got the previous owner encouraging you you tend to get carried away and a simple mistake to a non experienced chevy person like ordering the wrong heads that dictate the build and silly mistakes like leaving the diversion cap out in the oil pump/degreeing the cam too far back end up costing you.

The idea of a completely stock 300bhp, MODERN V8 with the potential to add a couple of turbos later on seems to be the way to go if i want to stick to the V8 dream and make the money i've invested seem worthwhile.

John said Friday's ex car parts are gone now but there is a third setup that might be up for sale for the right money but there's no rush for the time being so plenty of time to research a bit more.

i would really like a nissan v8 but they are hard to come by in this country, ive got a toyota 1uz sitting in my garage that i was going to put into my 200sx but that project got sidetrached by the 300 restoration. its quite tempting to put the toyota engine in

Now that's it just there!!!!:punk::punk:

Don't dare go selling Chevy stuff now I just got a Mickey!:glare:

  • Author

Daz, if anyone should buy it and do it properly it's you :D

Dougal, i think Friday that used to spend alot of time on this forum can import them - not sure if he's still operating his business
