Hiya, Whilst looking at alternator and starter motor location for another problem, I noticed that all timing belts have intermittent cracks on the inside, is this normal? I have not seen this style of belt before, usually it means that the belts need replacing asap. But on the 300 it looks like there may be some uniform pattern in spacing across the entire belt? I know that all belts need replacing on this car due to mileage and age anyway but wondered if it should be an urgent priority due to the appearance of these belts.

Please advise me, I have the challenge of keeping this car in good nick, as Salli has no idea about cars, its a bit daunting. Thanks in advance.

Dan, salli's partner.

I would get it changed as soon as you could. Just isnt worth the risk on such a big engine.

It could last for years like that but its not worth it imo:no:

Hi Dan, Are you talking about the ancillary belts? power steering, alternator. The belts have ribs on the back to make contact with the grooves in the pulleys, but if it has cracks then i would say it may be warn. It depends on the mileage of the car, but for the cost its worth replacing them.

The main timing belt, behind the black timing cover, is recommended to be changed at 60k miles, so might be worth considering also for peace of mind.

OK, warning taken :). Can anyone put me in touch with someone not too far away who might be able to do this for me?

The cambelt or the ancillary belts? The closest guy to you who has a track record with zeds is silverbullet (Mark) on the forum, not too far away from you.

Thanks Groover. I'll check with my partner as he may be able to do some of them - they probably all need doing, I have 97,000km on the clock.

Am I right in thinking I need to subscribe in order to PM another member?

lets put it this way ................ my last zed had a cambelt service done and although the belt lasted it was the original belt and had never been changed. last car only done 46k miles but the belt was still 18 years old. :)

and that one DIDN'T have any cracks .

so like others have said it is not worth the risk :)

hope yo find somewhere local and reliable .

regards
