Hi All,

Whan i bought the car i noticed that the steering had some heavy shaking at certain speeds however when i put my new Wolfrace shark wheels on, it almost totally disappeared.

This has since crept back at about 60mph where there is a vibration coming through to cause the steering to shake. First port of call was to see if the wheel had thrown a balance. took it to Tyre Spot who re-balanced the wheels. Still seems to be doing it though?

Anyone got any ideas what it could be? Anyone had similar problems in the past?

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

Peter

Worn propshaft support bearing can make it shake, might be worth a check.

It's not doing it when i brake, and only really does it when driving in a straight line and not when turning on a bend.

Is the propshaft bearing expensive or difficult to change?

Cheers

Genuine bearings are around the £180 mark. But theres some aftermarket ones on ebay, buy it now £35. Not sure what they are like though. Never fitted one so not sure if they need any specialist tools to mount them?

I had excessive wheel shake at 60-80 mph but since getting new tyres and rebalanced its now proper smooth, new car like almost.

I doubt its the prop bearing as these are RWD :wack:

might sound a bit silly but do your wheels require spigot rings? might want to check that...could be a possibility

As Baz mentioned, its probably the prop bearing, slide under your car and push/wobble your prop in the centre with a hammer or bar and see if there is any movement, the car shakes like hell when the bearing has gone.

I thought prop bearing gave more of a rumble through the transmission tunnel rather than wheel shake, I have bearing rummble at around 30-40 mph which then goes as I go faster.

I would also check your tyres for wear and correct pressures.

The wheels have spigot rings in them that fit fine. I do get a bit of rumble through the transmisson too so maybe that is it.

Anyone had one of the cheep propshaft bearings before. Just wondering what they are like.

It's an na auto by the way. Don't know if that makes any difference.

When the gearbox mount gives in, it causes vibration at speed. Generally you feel it through the seat first, not the steering wheel though.

Something possibly ovious..........low tyres pressures in certain wheels?

Since you put new alloys on which are just freshly fitted, thyre pressure may have been spot on, now you have run them for a while started losing abit of pressure. check them and have it aligned as that will be cheaper easier then going for the propshaft.

But after alignment i would go with baz's suggestion:thumbup:

propshaft related issues will not cause a shake through the steering wheel. (you will feel it through the car itself - seat, floor, pedals..etc).

If you've ruled out wheel balance and spigot rings, then check your tension rod bushes. THey are fairly easy to visually check as they are Gel filled and so any fluid leaks from around the bush is a clear indication of a worn bush.

Other option is to jack the front up and check for movement in the wheel manually.

Nah, that's what i thought with the original wheels as it seemed to go for a while when they were swapped over for the new wheels.

Ok. Had the car in the garage this morning and couldn't find anything with the front suspension, ball joint, bushes etc. Very slight leak on a shocker but it still has dampening effect. I'm bamboozled by this. I'm gonna look at getting the propshaft bearing done next anyway then I can rule that out.

Peter.

have you had a look at the tyre tread is possible that the tyre has gone out of shape would cause uneven wear over the tyre

I had wheel wobble for 2 years spent thousands and it was the last thing i changed :lol:

As Jeff said one of the most over looked things that can be quite common to go are steering rack bushes. drivers side is a pig of a job.

Give Dan a pm he has uprated ones for around £30 iirc

hi mate just a pure random question have you had a puncture recently and put some of that instant tyre repair stuff in, i did this on my car and had wheel shake,took to garage thought it needed balanced and he went nuts because he couldnt balance it ,after about half an hour i told him about the puncture.oops.had to clean out all the tyre weld and fix to get the wheel to balance all okay now.nearly a new tyre or alloy.{tyre weld}

Well got it sorted. Took it back to tyre spot and they re balanced them. Apparently the car had thrown one off almost as soon as I had them done the first time. After all that hassle.

Yeah, most likely, which caused me to have all this trouble, get up early 2 weekends in a row to get to garages and just make my life hell. When there is something wrong with my cars it's like an illness with a baby :(

Won't be using them for balancing again.
