Great....... just great!!!!!!!!!!

was about to raise car off ground and neighbours were all saying "shouldnt have a car on 4 axle stands" "you need to have a ramp on one end".

problem is gearbox dont work properly and i refuse to run my car with its broken water hoses....

there is no way i can push the rear of the car up ramp to get 18" clearance for the front to take out gearbox :(

any advice? i thought i was ready but i dont have a ramp and not sure what to do now :(

and whats the problem with having the car on 4 axle stands?

i did my engine out with 4 axle stands. as long as you put them in the correct places and they have a rating for the weight they are taking go ahead.

ok i will ignore them for now :P

free zed giveaway should i get squashed............... lottery to be continued :)

If you have some old wheels and tyres put them under the car as well, should your car slip it will fall on to these.

also... i might not fit jack under the car, i have to remove the front bumper anyway so would removing the bumper give me more clearance to fit jack under to jack it up?

cheers bud, like i said though, i dont have ramps, only a 2 ton trolley jack and 4 axle stands :)

but i will atleast try this tonight when my other 2 axle stands arrive

Ignor them, have it on 4 stands. If your under the car keep a wheel or two under there out the way with you so if the worst happends you have a survival zone. All good

Nothing wrong with sitting the car on 4 axle stands. Just make sure you put them in the correct places.

ok well i started to raise the car after getting bumper off (too me ages) and i just didnt feel safe. i jacked it up where it said and after already lifted the car very high from the front i still didnt have clearance to get axle stand under.... was a bit worried and left it for today :)

Journal will be up in 5-10 mins :P

I bought some 6ton "van" axle stands, they stand about 18" high before extending them. Gives a really solid base for the car to sit on, It feels that I could take a running push at the car and it wouldn't budge

did you raise one end at a time? i put chocks on behind the rear wheels and hand brake on good but as i was raising the front.. all sorts of noises happening put me off going further :(

Yep sure did. Although, now I think about it, I raised the front first and put the wheels on ramps. I then raised the back (front wheels will start to move back a bit when lifting the rear, so keep an eye on this) and put it on the stands. Finally, I raised the front off the ramps and onto the stands. You can of course do it the other way round.

You will get creaking and clunking noises as you jack up the car but as long as the jack is in the correct place (see diagram of jacking points) you will be fine.

yeah i used the diagram :) i dont have ramps so might have to get some made up

Jacking the car up and getting it off the ground is always the most stressful part of any job for me. I have actually had a factory jack snap on me, but I was using it improperly at the time.

I recommend using a couple of planks screwed together and of course stepped to create a small ramp for the front wheels. The key is to make sure the top plank on each ramp is long enough to allow for the car to roll back slightly when jacking the rear up onto stands without risking the front wheels rolling back down the ramp. Or if you are the woodworking type, you can create a dip/depression in the top planks for the wheels to settle into place.

Either way, with the fronts already part way up to jackstand height while sitting on the ramps, the rear of the car wont be at such a worrisome angle relative to the front and you can more easily get your floor jack onto the front cross member in order to jack it up.

That's how I lift mine, I still worry, but I worry much less than before.

cool matey :) i will look you up on this heheheh

so far i am now "following guide" and am removing dash (hard to do when car is in garage and i cant fully open doors)

then i will most likely need help raising car as it just looks so dodgy... i will follow others advice and raise from rear next time

cheers bud. i will follow this as it certainly is stressful. i am using the front jack mount but as that is quite far back compared to normal cars i still cant get the clearance i need for the front axle stands. luckily i dont have to do this bit until after i fit clutch booster etc
