Im probably setting myself up for a flaming here, but has anyone ever ratted a Z

You know rust n matt black everywhere :D

I intend to get myself a Z in the very near future, i just thought that i could get a cosmetically challenged one (thats mechanically sound) and go nuts on it.

What do you guys think?

Oh dear.

Don't see how being 'Proud' to own a 300ZX is being 'Arrogant'

I think the rat look has to be a yes or no you either like it or you don't, So various peoples opinions are fine, but lets not see this thread get out of hand through it (a) getting personal or (b) going way off topic

Thanks, Chris

Croque of shite.

I can just about see the appeal in a rat-rod. This was spmething that originated from the salt flats of Nevada. Where the salt attacked the bodies of the cars. The mechanicals were still kept up together so they could race them across the dried up salt lakes. Still not my slice of pie. But when the VW scene got hold of it.....it went even further down hill. People actually going out of their way to make their cars look shit, sanding down bonnets, letting them go rusty and then lacquering them... bolting old roof racks to them with some old oil cans and some tatty old fly-tip suit cases strapped to them...Jesus wept! It's a silly fad that should end some day soon!

Those two Golfs are absolutely pitiful. Complete turd.

I wont be putting a roof rack on dont worry, i think thats a stupid part of the scene. It is bulls**t having tack ontop waiting to fly off. Most rats are low powered beaten first cars so people dont care about them.

That golf with the stupid camber is rediculous aswell. Im not into the camber, slight stretch yes, but camber no. I still want my car to perform as it should.

I just saw a silver one on the road aswell. Damn it had presence. Its making me rethink ratting one.

But then i thought, how nice that would be with an oxide wing and matt bonnet :D

Sparky, if you want mine £800 quid, today's offer only, would have to be quick with the cash though, and your only down the road from me in bedford.

Doubt i can do that. Im having a think about my cars.

Ive already got an R5 and im considering re-insuring that, or selling that and getting a Zed.

I assume that car is tip top mechanically, you'll be the first to know what i do vodkashots, Northamptons not far from me.

Rs?

Renault 5 gt turbo

The thing is, i can fix that car with my eyes closed, if a ZX breaks down on me its gonna cost, but my thinking is that it wont break down as often

Ah ok i instantly thought ford and thought you had put a 5 instead of s, nice car though mate, never owned one but have been in a few and easy to work on :)

Ha, no worries. Parts are readily available and cheap, tuning for big power is so simple.

I've got to agree with SI they look crap!

What speed do you think that Golf go to before it started to peal itself apart!!!!

Personal experience FunkySi, their cheap as chips for a fast car. Bought mine for £800, rebuilt the engine 3 times since, fitted a TD04 turbo from a scooby, various parts bought. My total is still at £1600 minus tax mot and insurance.

They are cheap to buy, but certainly not to maintain and run. Sure, if you can do the work yourself, you shave off a whole bunch of money, but the parts are anything but cheap.

Nah its ok. Its the comunity that helps you out with spares and refurbished parts. Im hoping the ZX world is the same. I imagine the guys that know there stuff on these REALLY know their stuff, these a hell of alot more complicated than the R5, They dont even have an ECU for gods sake :D

People are very helpful on here. Lots of information can be had and pairs of hands to assist, but you have to understand that these cars cost big bucks to modify to a reasonable standard and if you want to go mad, there's people here who've spend 10s of thousands on engine mods alone.

Yeah i imagine they will be expensive, thats my only hesitation in getting one. Im going to want to spend money on it, and being a poor student its not ideal. But ive loved them for years and years. Ive been on about getting one for ages, but i can only now get insured, so its finally an option for me

Well, to give you an idea. The 1600 quid you spent on your entire R5 would probably 'Just' about buy you a set of decent uprated turbos. Engine builds can be done for cheap if you do it yourself. But parts are pricey. OEM head set runs you over 300, 120k service kit, I think is around the 600 mark.

:O im not going to be able to afford this. Do they have a history of breaking then, or will they generally be fine as long as i dont crank the power up?

Well, that depends on how the car has been maintained. Mine has never broken down. But I've had to have work done on it. Buy from a forum member and the history is usually good and you can check to see how they've been maintained.

Maintain them well and if you're upping the power, do the modifications to a good standard and the cars will be great! Do them on a shoe string, and you'll encounter expensive problems.

Generally if the car has been well looked after, you'll not have too many problems with it. Most of the 'good' cars on here are trouble free, but those are the ones that have had good levels of maintenance and also good quality supporting performance modifications.

The ones looked after and working well wont be the ratty ones then :D

Dont worry, if its nice to begin with i wont destroy it.
