Hi All

I've just had my car MOTd and it failed on the rear fog lights not working properly. It is a 1992 convertible which I have owned for about 5 years. It has passed all previous MOTs without issue. The problem is that I have never used the lights so I don't know how they should work and exactly which lights should light up. Added to that, I had a replacement rear bumper fitted this year so I guess it's possible that the cabling was affected then. My car has two fog light switches - one (1) on the right hand pod and a second (2) one (c/w orange indicator lamp) under the instrument cluster to the left of the steering wheel. Can anyone help with these questions please?

1. Switch1 seems to operate the front fogs which are fine. Switch2 I guess should operate the rear fogs - is that right?

2. I seem to have a pair of twin filament bulbs on each side at the rear. The outer ones are side/brake. Are the inners supposed to be side/fog?

3. When the rear fogs are switched on, I get sidelights. Any ideas?

for the mot you should have a rear fog that comes on and a switch that illuminates on the dash to let you know its on. do you have a rear fog? most on JDM's are mounted onto the rear of the bumper. did it get reconnected and put back on the bumper when you changed it? did the MOT station even know what switch to press for the rear fog?

Mmm .... may have an idea what's going on.

Can anyone answer - On a series 2 JDM:-

How many brake light bulbs light up with foot on brake? Is it 2 or 4?

How many twin filament bulbs at rear? Is it 2 or 4?

As standard both the UK and import zeds have 4 brake lights and 4 side lights at the rear, so 4 x twin filiments. The UK has a different rear bumper that has 2 x rear fogs built in to it, however only one ( drivers side ) actually is wired up.

There are a few ways to get a rear fog light on an import, the less popular but easiest is to hang an after market one of the rear bumper and wire to an illuminated switch at the front that is fed off the side light circuit.

Using one of the reverse lights in the same way ( fit a red bulb) is another way.

Using a change over relay to use the two inner brake lights is the best in my view.

As you have a switch and wiring in place anyone of these methods can be used, I bet the change of rear bumper is where the fog light issue arose, maybe hanging underneath out of sight?

Thanks Jeff, that makes total sense. I will need to check this in daylight but I think that on my car, the inner high wattage filament feed (red wire?) has been cut and then a new feed soldered to the stub cable on the drivers side only.
