The other day i was looking on the site, trying to find out if anyone else had issues with their short shifter being stiff and awkward to use.

 

Finding that other had... but with no real answer to sorting it, i pulled mine and had a fiddle.

 

The nylon bushes are quite plainly............CRAP !

 

so. I got some fine wet n dry and just gave the metal shaft a quick once over :thumbup1: to remove any build up.

 

I then used a mix of both vaseline ( this is a help thread.... honest ! ) and silicone spray and reinstalled the bushes back into the shifter and put it all together.

 

Its 100 % better little effort is needed to engage gears yet it feels

( chunky ) to shift.

 

It took about half an hour all in all and is a free improvement.

There is also the option of Bronze bushings. I've fitted them to mine and provides much better feel than the nylon bushes and will last forever.

I found the main nut on mine was too tight when I first installed, and was very stiff. I backed it off a turn and has been ok since.

Is it a noticable difference with a short shifter fitted? they seem fairly short as standard? must admit I do like the high centre console, feels very sporty :lol:

Ho humn, bought a sort shift recently. Is it just because it slightly loweer to the console that you don't like?

no its not any lower cos previous owner fitted a big momo lever just dont feel as easy to change gear.my lwb without the shifter is so easy and precise but the swb's just is not

I have issues with the spherical bearing. Seems to rattle at high speed. I think i will have to get a closer tolerance bearing.

Short shifters are not actually shorter, they sit no lower. Its the throw that is shorter. (the amount of movement required from one gear to the next)

 

 

 

**although you can get a short shifter that is shorter as well.

Shortsifter = Harder/more effort .....but less movement, so in theory quicker gear changes. In reality its more about the sporty feel. Some love, some hate.

 

Some shortshifters also produce a clunky noise on each gear change, which again appeal to some and not to others.

 

The suggestion by 6volt, or fitting brass bushings would help to relieve some of the stiffness.

 

Its also true that overtightening is a common sympton of stiff gearchange, and I've also seen problems with people unable to get into some gears because they have incorrectly used bolts too long to mount the shifter that actually fowl with the linkage.

before today mine felt like crap and this was a last ditch attempt to make it a little better...and i can honestly say i am very happy with the result.
