Motorbike fans?

Hi guys.

Well im going to be sitting the DAS course. But the person has said its best to take it in steps and do my own theory first then goto them. So instead im going to do my CBT first(already done one before but it ran out) and then get my theory test.

I originally had a yamaha dragstar xvs 125 which was ok, but lacked that little bit of extra power i would have liked to 70mph. Tho i loved the riding position.

So basically what im wondering is.............

Do any use guys know of a good bike to go for, id rather one that is more powerful than the required 33BHP and have "restrictor kit" on it.

Anybody that can help with this, will hopefully be doing the cbt on monday the 15th.

Cheers

What sort of riding style are you after? chop like the dragstar, sporty, or something inbetween. also an idea of budget would be good

Not so bothered about style if im being honest. But i dont see the point in superbike looks without the power to back it up so i would say that styles out the window, chopper style for crusing would be first choice then after would be street fighter style sort of bandit/hornet design.

Price.........think 1k is a good enough budget to find something.

There is plenty of choice out there... I would pay a bit more for a motorbike just to be on the safe side...you only have two weels... you don`t want something to go wrong. I very much like motorbikes and I owned a couple but to be onest the best one was a Ducatti 999 monster(year of manuf. 2000). Sure...it is a bit more epensive...but you know what they say..you get what you`re paiyng for. Ducatti has everything you need..style, power and they sound awesome! I would go for Ducatti!

Best of luck with your search

My brother has a ducatti monster i think it is in black and its freaking gorgeous, just off the phone to him there as hes an ex harley davidson mechanic.

ANyways........i completely forgot about being only the CBT i wanted to go for......i need to stick to a 125 then when i do the DAS i can get a bigger bike and dont have to restrict it

(forgot all about that, brother reminded me.lol)

So i would be after a powerful 125 if anybody knows some good ones?

Think im going to go for a bandit or hornet tho as my first big bike.

Yamaha TZR125, Honda NSR125, Suzuki RG125, Yamaha RXS100 were the kings of the 125s when I were a lad - all easily de-restrictable too. Since then, Aprilia RS125, Honda CBR125, Yamaha YZF-R125 (most modern of the bunch but big money) rule.

I lover my TZR. Both of your first big bike choices are decent.

Please consider doing some advanced training after you've done the ministry one - you'll be much, much safer on the road. Safety on bikes is a mental game once you know the basics of riding. http://www.i2imca.com are ace for bike control and IAM or RoSPA for roadcraft.

Ducati has 1 T in it guys.. lol

What you want is a nice 1098 that will do the business...

rs125 or the mighty cagiva mito evo get an itialin import most plated older than they actually are but by far the best and fastest 125,s out but beware both two strokes and go bang at any -time or go a tad older cbr6f get it re-stricted then pass the test and release its power

Agreed, these are the best 2 to go for on L plates. Problem is cheap ones are risky, and decent examples are expensive for what they are.

I was in the bike trade for 5 years (Paisley and Glasgow), and to be honest, don't see the advantages of going the route that has been suggested to you.

Assuming you are over 21, I would suggest going Direct Access if funds allow.

There are several reputable rider training firms out there that will do you DAS in 1 week, on their training fleet for around the 500 GBP mark.

You will lose more than that in running a 125 for 6 months then reselling. You will also pick up all the bad habits while you are riding around on your L plates, and to be honest, we used to have a higher first time pass rate for candidates on DAS who were completely new to biking because of this.

In my humble, the most cost effective, time efficient, and safest way to go is to go DAS.

Who were you thinking of training with?

Yeah i have to agree with this been a biker now for 30 years and its the best route to take

I'll throw my hat in the ring with DAS as well.

Been on them for 15 years. Don't jump on something with silly power straight away, but a 125 will have you bored within the week.

A good starting bike on a budget would be a baby blade or something similar.

CBR/VFR/ZXR 400....I've had them all and even wrote a review on the ZXR for a mag.

Im heading to ireland today to visit my brother, so i will be going round some motorbike shops, my brother worked in paisley, where did you where derek and what year?

I am not sure who i will be training with, but i was informed you need to do it all basically one after the other now, you cant go and just do it all in one week as the companies are not allowed to book test slots when they dont know if you have passed the modules required to do the next test.

I want to do a DAS course but it appear it wont happen so i was told.

Company i was looking at was down in irvine, but not sure who to go for, the companies in paisley dont seem very helpful toward me to do a DAS course.

Any suggestions derek?

got my theory test booked for the 16th or march, just applied for it there so best get reading up to re-fresh my mind for it now.

Anybody got books?lol. Or DVDs. Been sittign a few online theory tests and doing well but just incase theres a better teaching guide in dvds etc.

Sorry, just seen this.

Don't know if they are still open, but recommend Jim Harley, Cowlairs Road in Glasgow. (Springburn).

Thats where I used to work. Started up their workshop for them many moons ago.

I have my CBT tomorrow anyways mate and i will be asking those folks about going for my large bike license.

Spend all day (nice and sunny) doing my CBT today!

%hours of riding it works out i have done and i am very happy and really enjoyed myself today on the little 125cc.lol. So passed the CBT no problem. Theory test on tuesday:D!

You are on a roll Craigyboy !!

Best wishes to you tomorrow !

I can see you a member of the S.O.A. as I type !!:cool2:

Seriously dude, good luck !

Alan..........

S.O.A??lol.

No the theory is tuesday.

To be honest im really pleased and happy these last few days, got a gorgeous car and closing in for my bike stuff.lol.

I chopped my sportsbike (fireblade) in for supermoto - total fun on the road and can be as quick in the twisties due to flickability and light weight. Something like a drz400SM - Think these can be restricted too. Hooligans toy - wheelies everywhere and you can do light green laning on standard road tyres....

I'm not into that mate. My main priority is to be safe and just enjoy the drive.lol

dont get me wrong, they have a lot more control than on a sports bike, bought me missus a gsxr 600 as a first bike but it was too much so were now selling it - the drz is more sit up and has a good turning circle.

The gsxr can be a bit heavy on slow turns and combined with the poor steering (i.e. lean) if you mess up on a corner you'll be in the hedge. A sit up bike allows more steering turn and is lighter.

Anyways mate, whatever you choose - be safe ;)

Dude I lost two close friends on bikes, I have had an R1, R6, GSXR 600 and MV augusta to name but a few. Thing is they dont call them "Donor cycles" for a reason go easy craig!!! and really have a good think about it.

As I said mate I'm a cruising type when it comes to bikes. Sit back relax and let rip a big fat exhaust Harley style.lol
