Fuel rich smell and low mpg?

My car smells very rich and working out how much fuel I went through with testing the engine I'm inclined to believe it is indeed running rich, would this be a problem with the o2 sensors? Or something else, I think I do still have a small air leak on the inbonnet fuse box air intake pipe to throttle body, could this also be a attributing factor? Or should I be looking some where else?

both of those would cause a problem & rich running...sort the air leak 1st then get conzult on the car to check the o2 sensor i reckon ;-)

What sort of fuel economy are you experiencing?

A chart topping 8mpg lol 12 at a push

I get smoke from both exhuasts but due to cold weather I'm not sure if it's smoke or condensation burning off the pipes it's light and fluffy looks like it does when you breath out in the cold, it doesn't smell of coolant and I'm not burning oil, the coolant in my rad is still at the same level it was when I refreshed the system an the engine is very smooth. so I know I can rule out head gasket failure oh and it's White smoke well I say smoke it's more like mist. I might be just paranoid due to having changed the engine but I'd rather be safe than sorry before I do any damage to it.

As for consults I don't no anyone near me with.

But thanks for the speedy replies at such a late hour lol

Ah its fine, if i go to sleep it means im one more step closer to work tomorrow.... stupid pharmacy! Stupid machine!

8-12mpg isnt great I admit but if your not doing mega miles then.... Is it getting to temperature and how long of a drive are you taking it on?

Mine does about 15mpg and thats a mixture of spirited driving, motorway cruising and general running about.

As for the clouds of "smoke" it will be condensation this time of year, mine does it lots. Nothing to worry about, just a trait of larger engined cars (notice most 6 and 8 cylinder BMW's plume smoke/condensation this time of year!)

It was small journys it went on, the car is currntkg off he road at the moment due to some welding work needing doing (thanks to leaky targas) and some new tyres needed, but would like to narrow down this rich running as I'm goin to be putting the car in for the welding work at the MOT station so it can go strate for the test, that way if it fails on the welding work I'll be having words

lol

so the smoking is normal for this time of year for the engine size that's good to know it does clear up alot once the engine comes up to temp and it doesn't suffer with over heating problems

Im not sure why but all of my cars have done it, my parents do it as well. My M3 was horrendous, i did think there was something wrong with it at first, it just takes several miles to clear if you drive them carefully (as I do to warm stuff up gently!)

As for economy, its perhaps a little on the low side but unless it fails on emissions, and It will do well too as they fall under the "does it kill the driver from the fumes" yes or no test because these things are so old. I would put that down to a cold engine on short runs, these cars are horrific on juice in that environment. Hell fire I could watch the fuel gauge go down on my old one when it was cold on a cold day doing stop start driving... eek!

Speaking of which, for old times sake!

Anyone got consults around northamptonshire area? so i can find out if its the O2 sensors or not?

I know you can do it via the ECU, but i think it would be a lot easier to do it with consults and see if anything else is wrong with it.
