Right i currently converted my car (1996 auto) to mph but its stalls now and then and not to mention i was doing 90mph and it just cut out completely . so my next idea is instead of converting it ill get a set of dials that read kph on the out side but mph in the middle i was hoping for some Indiglo Dials does anyone know were i can source these from , i no z center does it but i need to see the pics better etc

Hi Ike The EL dials have the MPH on the outside of the dial with KPH on the inner circle of the dial. If you were to remove the convertor for the clock to read in KPH the MPH reading of the clock face would be out and still not read the correct mph reading.

Check the wiring on the back of the speedo for the convertor again Ike, make sure the screws that the the wires are attached too are tight and make sure the connection to the speed pulse is solid.

It could be the convertor thats not working as it should, in which case bin it and get a one from the zcentre. The one you have was from ebay, several years ago, the zcentre ones are more pricey but claim to be spot on ( better quality) You can wire it up the same way as the old one.

Second option a bit more involved and maybe not your cup of tea, but there is a resistor on the back of the speedo circuit board that can be changed to 100hm IIRC, this changes the pulse the ecu receives to read mph, but the speedo may still need calibrating by adjusting the pot on the board of the speedo. More info available on this if required.

Third option and im not sure if this has been tried before, but here goes: get UK clocks and have the older series connectors spliced into you existing connector loom. The only problem with this is getting the right wires in the correct place to match the facilities of the board. Obviously you wouldnt have the airbag light, there are some differences to the older/newer series models.

I can study the differences, but at the end of the day it depends on the wiring diagram compatibility.

Ill pm ya budd , i think its the convertor then as luke said that a 1996 should have a special one or a differant one at least

If the car's a 96 then it'll have the series 4 clocks which means there's no resistors on the back of the speedo to adjust. Also the faces of the clocks are a different shape and have different mounting points than earlier clocks which means you can't use indiglo dials as they're all in the shape of earlier clocks and won't fit in your dash. They can't be trimmed to fit as this would damage the EL material that makes them glow.

The speed sensor on the gearbox on the 96 is the same as the earlier models so you don't need a special one for a 96, but you will suffer from the same problem that you get with all the speed converters in that all the electronics on the car that rely on the speed (power steering, hicas, etc) will be out by a factor of 5/8.

I got round this by mounting a set of series 2 clocks into a series 4 dash as this way you can do the resistor mod and get your clocks reading spot on in Mph and the ECU speed signal is correct as well. This also meant that i could mount the indiglo faces on all the clocks and i even got to keep my airbag warning light. This, however, is not for the faint hearted as there's a lot of work to get the clocks to line up right with the dash and although the plugs that go into the back of the dash look similar to the earlier cars they are wired completely differently.

Oooh, does anyone know of a write up on changing the resistor? I've got the same problems, I only need to know which one and what to change it to really....
