i ve been offered a gto for a great price. The problem is that the autobox will only drive down the road till it warms up then disengage and just revs, then it has to be left to cool before it will hold gear again, is the gearbox shoot or could it just be eletrical. Also could the box be swapped without removing the engine?

Aren't GTO's 4wd? is that just some of them? if so then gearbox removal probably wont be so easy. Not sure on these but a some nevwer cars have solenoid problems that make it do that, can't really see how it would be mechanical?

I think it is 4wd, will be having a look at it later, I was just told that he cooked the autobox and since then it has has this problem

Check the oil, should be red, if its brown or black its cooked, will be a burnt out clutch, could be electrical with a solenoid breaking down with heat but it does sound mechanical ie clutch fault in the box but until you check the oil its a bit if a guessing game.

would the engine have to come out to do clutch/gearbox work??

I havent worked on a GTO before, might be an idea to sign up for a GTO forum and search there, would imagine the box out would be a full strip down, dont think they are the easiest to work on.

I did ask a question on an open forum, so far 53 have looked and no reply s. seem a friendly lot;)

lol sounds typical responce from forum members, I have Mitsubishi manuals on my pc but none for the GT0. I think Indian ZX has a GTO or has had a gto, seem to remember him mentioning it in a post, might be an idea to pm him.

Is it a twin turbo or an NA?. I dont think for £400 its a bad price but these cars are like zeds, ie they can be a money pit if you are gonna fix them up, if you are gonna break it for spares then I would think you would get £400 back no problem for parts. Maybee not something you thought about but its worth it with these cars.

He says the fluid overheated........sounds like a terminal gearbox for a kick off, gotta be clutch damage=gearbox overhaul/replacement.

if you do buy it i have mitsubishi gto workshop factory manuals and other parts as i had one my self

I went, the car was ok, think the head was going too as there was a little bit of cream on the oil cap and rocker cover, but shell was good and engine seemed ok for the mo, if anyone else wants a project??

The autos arent very exciting,by the time you fix the box(good ones hard to come by) put a cambelt on it, you wont be far off TT prices (1200-2000 ebay, for rust free cars).

Speak to the guys at GTOWORLD, one of the few gto garages that dont see you as a mobile payday..

I was offered a manual GTO TT for Just over £1150, with 6 months tax+ test a week ago.Guess what i pimp around in while the zeds in bits ?

I just fought it might be a money maker, still have two Z projects and a house to do so I have enough to get on with.

Do you prefer the Z or gto??

build quality on the gto is far better but as mechanically and electrically not on the same ball park as the zeds overall i prefer my zeds

i heard a wrecked box is a 3 grand job

As for driving,The positives of gto are in the wet + snow i've been through, the zed would of been dangerous + way slower, the gto strolled it without a slip.

In the dry the zed is predictable loony fun, the gto just grip, grips +grips, then launches off towards the hedge with barely any warning.Being Big and heavy, its luck alone that will keep you safe then.

The zed definitely 'talks' to you more, i always knew what was happening in mine..

As for £3k boxes in the same way that zed turbos are £3000 from nissan to get fixed. :sailor: Or not!

Really depends where you go as prices vary wildly .

Some think you must be rich + mechanicly dense.Really annoying.

Anyhow the outputs can strip splines off if you do aggrssive launchs all the time ,Its the slack not being taken up that does it, + are £250 bits, around £200- £1000  to get fitted

Some places are silly expensive, i've been quoted £525+ vat for a cambelt kit just for parts.

Then you can get the lot for £450 fitted, all genuine parts... You can also change gto turbos on the drive in a day, with engine in(not saying its easy, its the other way around + 1 tubs next to the bulkhead...

grahams gto parts on evilbay(gtoworld) seem good so far. It'll do as a daily till zedtime
