Hi guys.

I've been having the usual problem of fuel smell whilst cold running my Jap TT, I've replaced a few pipes although I haven't been brave enough to dismantle the parts needed to replace the front fuel pipe!

The problem I'm having seems to be more than a mere leak however, more of an overfueling BEFORE the engine is up to temperature. If I get out of the car I can smell it out the back of the exhausts and there's a definate coke build-up around the exits.

Once the engine is warm - no smell.

So I'm thinking temperature sensor maybe? I'm no mechanic so I'm here asking the experts.. you lot!

Diagnosis and possible solution much appreciated!

Smell everyone mate, i know on startup mine has a slight fuel smell, but its the engine side of things, go around the car when you start it and smell everyone, easiest way to do it

The was a thing about this on the site a few months back, someone will post a link up soon.

nice one Murt had a good laugh at that but I forgive you as you posted at 2.50 so maybe a bit tired. Going round smelling all your mates when you start your zed will not find fuel leaks lol try smelling round the engine bay:stupid::lol::lol::lol:

Well I sniffed all my mates and I got a black eye for my troubles but the fuel smell is still there. If it's the pipe then I'll change it but I don't see how a fuel leak in the engine bay is making it's making it's way through the exhaust and coking up. Anyone else before disassemble the front throttle assembly to get to it?

Smell on start up is usually a small leak from the various fuel pipes around the plenum. I would tighten all the jubilee clips. I have in the past (now this sounds daft!!). Sprinkled talc on the pipes when the engine is cold. Then when on start up if there is a leak it will show....plus you will have a nice smelling engine bay LOL

Also check the fuel regulator closely, i had one with a small leak where the seam seal is, on the body itself, and it was to the rear so could not see it at first.

ps, do you have the braided fuel lines kit.

info

Its usually on the pipe connection under the FPR leading down to the injector rail which you cannot see until you take the cover over the throttle cables off.

When this is leaking due to very cold aged shrunken fuel hoses about a teacup of petrol is being dumped down the vee of the engine and running down the back of the bell housing onto the ground. Thats what you smell. Once there is a little heat in the engine said hose connection warms up flexes and seals and no more leak - till it's cold again.

Often garages will diagnose leaking FPR because thats what it looks like but then the petrol smell never goes away and you remain at risk of an engine fire!!!

Tightening hose clip usually fixes this but the cure is to buy 8mm fuel hose and replace all the old hoses on the fuel system after the fuel filter in the engine bay.
