Hi,

 

Ive had my engine rebuilt about a year ago now its just sitting on an engine stand. I just havent got round to fitting the turbos etc.

 

Ive been turning the engine over now and again at the crank, I know when it was built it was well creased etc! But do you think i should fill the engine with engine oil to prevent any damage?

i would put a little oil in the bores, dunno bout the engine, as it wont be able to pump it round

most important is to store it at a dry location and not in a humid shed or something.

You can put some oil in the bores, but put the sparkplugs back in afterwards.

If possible remove the cambelt and set all camshaft pulleys in the neutral location, to release tension from the valve-springs and at the same time close the cylinders airtight.

 

Turning the crankshaft every once in a while is good also (can still be done with the cambelt removed and camshafts in neutral position)

My engine is stored at my lock up which used to be a refridgerated unit for mushrooms im hopeing its insulated enough...But it has been cold lately :(

Hi Dan, do not remove the cambelt and do put oil in the sump. Cambelts and pulleys are designed to take the tension when fitted and if in place, there is no chance of the valves colliding with the pistons. Do put the correct amount of oil in the sump, this will give off an oil mist which will protect the inside of the engine. When turning the engine over, remove the plugs to alleviate the compression and you can put some oil down the bores, I would say about about 40 mil each bore and give it chance to settle and run down the side of the piston crown to the first ring. Then using a socket on the pulley bolt, turn the engine slowly in a clockwise direction, I would say about 10 revolutions, this will lubricate the bore. Now put a drill on the socket to hopefully turn the engine over a lot quicker and for about a 5 minutes. This will circulate the oil up around the camshafts and also through the oil galleries and bearings. This should be done about every 2 weeks and all will be fine. A dry storage environment is essential and I would be tempted to throw a cover over the whole assembly impregnated with oil, not sopping but preferably sprayed with a fine oil to inhibit corrosion to the outside.(Don't forget to refit the plugs, very important)

Great :) Thanks for your reply ill get on to it straight away! The last thing i want is for the engine to be no good after all this time and money

make sure to put oil in the filter rather than just in the sump, it helps speed up oil circulation
