Reet, here goes, she's had a new loom, used but working PTU, mostly every pipe changed, new IC,intake pipes, new plugs, any many more things, i think the only things not changed are the CAS and TPS....

The problem is, she runs beautifully, revs as sweet as a nut, ticks over a little fast tho, sometimes, but if i rev her, a good foot down rev (whilst stationary), then sometimes it seems to return to tickover, but sounds like she's running on 5 cylinders, also when driving, there is no low end torque, but when you slowly get to about 3500 revs she shoots off like a rocket, although maybe not as fast as she should be, ecu diagnostic comes back 55 99% of the time, but very rarely get a 34, dett sensor, which has been replaced, all be it re-located...

I intend to balance the throttle bodies as they have been off a few times lately, but they are nice and clean as that was one of the first things i did...

Any ideas as to what could be causing her to be like that? Maybe a knackered TPS?

Cheers guys...

Also seems to be over fuelling, exhaust smells very rich, and i get lots of 'pops' from the exhaust, as if she's dumping fuel into the manifold/cats....

Also, i have left over on the new loom, 2 greyish white 2 pin square connectors, one on either side, which i presume are for for the AIVs which are not in use, and one same connector but black, which i think is the EGR solenoid, however i can't seem to find it, so it's remained unplugged, could these plugs not being connected cause problems? or perhaps i have idetified them wrong and one or more of them is for something important.... i have one solenoid on either side of the car on the inner wheel arch/wing, but all 3 connectors wont reach....

also, i have 1 mm boost jets, and standard spark plugs with the standard 1mm gap, could that be an issue? should close the gap a bit? could they be fouling? sorry to go on about it, but everytime i think of something, i have to post it! :)

could well be lambda sensors. once past about 3500 you will be running on the engine map (open loop) so data from the lambda sensors will be ignored. try disconnecting them and go for a run. my 200 did this when the sensor died.

also dont assume the sensors are working unless you have seen them on consult

I've had a strobe on it and checked her, yeah mate, was a few degrees out, but sorted it, but as of the electronic timing, i don't know! i just wish i had conzult, i think my life would be a lot easier!....................

  • Author

ignore that last message, i have been drinking... yeah, i've checked the timing, and it was slightly out, and i cured it.... time for bed, and maybe a beer.... hehehehehe......

  • Author

i cured it with the CAS, is that what you mean? forgive me for participating in friday night shannigans................... :duffer: :duffer: :duffer: :duffer:

a conzult would help lots! where did you clamp the strobe too? the loop wire on the ptu can sometimes give bad readings from what ive heard try getting a plug lead type, it goes in one of the coilpacks & u get a reading off that, should read 25 i think with car in neutral, as u said u get a det code its what is making me think timming! as it firing to early by the sounds of it which would explain the popping! but so could other things but its one more avenue to eliminate!

check all the injector plugs are making a good connection too, mine would work lose etc then be ok for a min then lose again, another thing could be a coil pack breaking down under load! have u tried replacing these?

does your car stall when u disconnect the maf while its running?

  • Author

Thanks mate! Yeah, it stalls if i disconnect the MAF... I used the wire from the PTU to connect to the strobe... I have done a manual conversion, but i remember reading somewhere that you have do something to the ECU, to do with neutral? I think that effects the timing or something? Anyways, whatever it is, i haven't done it... I have another set of coilpacks, so i'll try swapping them, but it seems to be random cylinders that pack up after revving it, but switch her off for a minute, then she's spot on, that's what's making me think plugs, fouling, probably because of over fuelling, but i don't know why.... and yeah mate, i'd give my right arm for conzult right now! :)

in which case you should be setting it to 25 deg btdc if you have not got the neutral wire connected after a manual conversion

this will cause the symptoms you have

  • Author

thankyou, i have done that, but will check it again, which pin on the loom do i have to short out for the neutral switch? is it worth doing? i pressume if i do that, then the timing will need to be set to a different degree? it's really annoying me now, been doing her up for 2 and a half years, and i love it to bits, but so close, just niggly problems! summet and nowt spring to mind!

not sure about which pin to use but there is a faq on manual wiring.

as far as i know

on a standard z timing should be 15 btdc in neutral, once a gear is engaged the ecu will change this to 25

if you leave out the connection to neutral you should just set the ignition to 25 btdc

what did you set it to. if it was 15 then you will be running 10deg retarded which will make the engine very sluggish at low rpm and also run too hot and have poor fuel economy.

i would you set the timing to 25 and see if this improves things. if not then check the lambda sensors as i suggested

Pete

I set it to 15 degrees, hehe, what you are saying makes perfects sense, 10 degrees out is a fair bit, i can't wait to get my strobe out tomorrow! i only hope it cures the problem, or at least improves the symptoms, if not cured, then lambda tests... once again, thanks for the tips, i'll keep ya posted....

Timing was at 15, changed it to 25, and oh my god, she is flying, infact, quite scary! She's never run so well... It's like being kicked in the chest when ya touch the throttle... It's taken 2 and a half years of blood sweat an tears, and she's finally right, couple of niggly jobs for the MOT, then happy days, thanks to everyone for your help, although I'm sure I'll be on here with another problem soon :)

Well done Tudor - good to hear your hard work off - you will get even MORE satisfaction now knowing that it is your own blood sweat and tears partly dual-fuelling your zed. ;-)) As my Zed is still in a million boxes and mainly 'in the post' - I look forward very much as my day of joy approaches. Jeez I hope it's this year!

have u checked the timming???

bloody hell i got something right lol just wish i could sort my own car out...lol:hammer:

Cheers Andy, and, yep, Weazel, you defied all the odds and impressed us all, with a correct diagnosis, hahaha, only messin mate, thanks for the tip.......... :)

  • Author

thanks pal, i'm still buzzing at how well she runs/drives! that was my first drive on full boost and running properly, very impressive indeed, more than i expected!
