I'm new to the fun of owning a zed, I've had mine since October (also my first car). So far everything is going well, took it to zedworld on Friday and got it looked over. Seems as though appart from a new set of tyres on the front everything is great! Had a suprising discovery though that it had been chipped so that I can turn up the boost pressure from 10 to 14psi. What I'm wondering is what will this do to the turbos in the long run? Also how do I even go about changing the current setting?

Since this is your first car I would strongly recommend that you don't turn turn up the boost until you have got used to how the zed handles. There's a big difference in 9psi (standard) to 14! That said the extra boost won't hurt the turbos. "Chipping" the ecu does not in itself create extra boost, what it does do is change the fuel mapping to let the car take advantage of extra boost. To increase boost you need to use boost jets or a boost controller. Standard "stage 1" upgrades are catback exhaust, cone filter, boost jets/controller and a ecu remap "chip". Chances are you've already got these installed.

Well if the Previous Owner had set the boost to only 10psi there may well be a reason for it (perhaps a quick ring to clarify) or he may have just wanted to play safe!

 

Also if you whack the boost right up to 14.5psi (1bar) you are really maxing out your Fuel injectors and risk running Lean which on boost is only going to make things fail fast! Your turbos are old if they are stock and you may or may not have any idea of condition and the higher you crank up the boost the Shorter the life of them so remember to take this into consideration. Running max boost may work for 2days, 2weeks, 2years who knows its all in the condition of all the parts!

 

In my opinion its an Unnecessary risk to go to the max, 12.5-13psi gives you a great kick still but gives you that margin of safety :)

Well it's a few more months down the line and I'm thinking of playing with the boost settings, how many ponies would be expected at about 13-14 psi? Also what are boost injectors? Are they just larger ones essentially? Where's the best place to get some of these or a boost controller?

 

Reading back through the posts I don't seem to have any of the typical stage 1 upgrades. I think I just have the different ECU, it was Zedworld who told me about it, I wouldn't know the difference probably.

 

On a side note are Mongoose exhausts any good? How do they compare sound wise to the stock exhaust.

Looks a good standard UK example there matey, very nice. As for boost tips, they fit into the turbo pipework to increase the pressure, thus increasing boost. I would personally go for an electronic boost controller (ebc), these little gizmo's control all parameters of boost control. The preferred ebc is a greddy profec b spec II, great spec, and good value.

 

Some members here do run mongoose zorsts, as for sounding i am not sure. Post up in the "help and adivce" section for a better response matey.
