Hi all, anyone that can help or advise me concerning my PS3?

I bought a 160gb PS3 when they first came out ( over a year ago) and although when playing the games I am well happy, getting them to work has been a mission from day one.

When I first used it and connected it all up to the internet etc. the screen display said the software was out of date and needed updating?? this puzzed me as I bought it only 9 days after the 160gb was released but hey ho let it do its thing, nearly 1 hour later of downloading and rebooting it seemed all done and so I put my first game in and the flipping screen display came up saying to play the particular game it needed a software update!!! what the !!!

Ok so again went through the search updates and 30 mins later up and running. So happy all was ok over the past year have been buying games but each and every time a new game goes in an update is required!! flipping thing is driving me mad...loved my PS 2 to bits, swithed it on and then just played the games.

Ok missus wanted a singalong game for christmas party so she got the ABBA one but depsite the usual download request etc it could not fin eteh correct download??/ so forget that one.

So here we are now just popped Assinss Creed II in and guess what, bloody download required! so here we go, 80mb of download again and its up and running...finally.

I am confused as other PS3 owners I speak to don not seem to have to keep updating, is it just the 160gb unit or what? really unimpressed with the whole thing as its never a switch on and go, my ps2 is still plugged into the tv and if I find myself in the mood for a bit of gaming the PS3 gets sidelined.

Is there any master download for all the software? or is my unit faulty

Thanks

Jeff

not sure jeff, but if its alway new games you are buying then they will alway run at a more advanced version which your system may not support, but i imagine it should and there is a fault possibly.

Ive only had to do 1 update in a year of owning my 80gb ps3 which only took 15mins.

There is some good gaming gurus who should give a more detailed answer tho.

i update mine with nearly ever new game its a game update not a ps3 update usually fixing and little bugs ect that was found after release very rare that i actually update the console software

most games require updating once in a while as bugs are fixed, and the PS3 is updated once every couple of months or so. new games will often receive a patch within the first couple of months once the developers suddenly realise something was broken in the game!

what sort of internet connection have you got Jeff as it should only take 3 mins or so for the average game update (including download and installation).

the PS3 update is a hefty one and can take 10/15 mins depending on connection.

Have a 2m connection but using wirless for the ps3 so maybe the wireless is slowing it down with the WEP encryption?

Jeff

It is a lot fast if you can plug it direct to the internet.

Do you use the ps3 a lot, if not thats why you always have downloads

Because of the issues I have been using the PS2 more, the PS3 gets used rarely at the moment, maybe that is the problem as you said.

Jeff

If you can plug it in to the internet, it will be so much faster

Seconded, get it plugged in, the 15mb game patches that occationally appear take no time at all.

So the wirless encryption really makes that much difference then?

Oh and after two hours of Assassins Creed ll...wow what fun.

such a good game. ps3 installs are a joke big time. when you find its slow i have found if you cancel then try again its quicker, i think there is a bug in the ps3. i had a new slim and it needed a system update an hour and half later the fookin thing was only 37% done so i canceled it and it then went faster but i have had to do this to every game i have had for christmas

I honestly haven't experienced anything like this, from my experience firmware updated usually take longer as soon as they come out and everybody downloads at once (like any download would when the servers are on full load). They are going to be mandatory soon instead of optional as well.
