i have series 4 manual control for my central heating.

just been out now the snow as fully cleared from everywhere and i drove for a good 30 mins, some motorway blasting as well as normal roads.

i must of got it fully warm.

my temp gauge on the dash clocks never got above about a 3rd up, i also have a stack after market temp gauge and this was almost on 100 degrees fahrenheit.

consequently the heat in the cabin was not hot although it was aired to warm, i never turned the heat setting down it was up as far as it would go!!!

i may need a new thermostat, i know that, as this will make me more toasty in the winter.

a few weeks ago the dash clock reached about half way and the stack one got up to 125 degrees.

is this normal in winter time when the outside temp is in low figures?

Temp gauge should read the same winter and summer ( roughly) as the thermosats modulates the engine core temperature actively. Check the water level and any air locks, also make sure your viscous fan coupling has not siezed, if all ok it is likely the themostat is not working correctly or is a non genuine unit.

I thought the target running temperature for the standard thermostat was 87 or 88*c somewhere around that point?

thank you jeff, i have read both those links/write ups.

it does seem my stat couls well be faulty and would make great sense to change and then to see what happens.

you sell the stats then do you?

talking about my stack pillar guage here:-

just looked at a conversion chart and last night it was, when fully warm, just short of 100 degrees farhenheit, this is only 38 celsius.

a few weeks ago it was 125 degrees and this is 52 celsius.

from what help i have had and what i have read this is way too low.

and to clarify the rad is full with green shrek coloured coolant.

Thats much too cold mate, you'll not be doing the engine any favours by running it cold like that. It'll probably running 'on choke' all the time too, pissing away your fuel and giving you a nice dose of bore wash. New 'stat time, you'll need to replace the coolant and bleed after that anyway so don't worry about that. Normal running temp should be about 190-195 Farenheit.

thats exactly what i think, been out today and it reaches 99f.

apparantly the previous owner tells me this:

Its got a coolant conditioner in it that is green. Its ultraviolet to help locate any leaks. It also helps reduce the running temperature by removing all the oxygen from the water.

this stuff cannot be reducing the temp as massive as i have!!!

where is the thermostat located please?

:punk:

in the lower of the 2 hard pipes, bit of a pain in the ass to access really.

thank you my friend, i will locate tomorrow when its light.

i am making arrangements to get the correct stat, should make an absolute world of difference methinks.

thanks again.

surely you can't get an engine to run that cold once 'warmed up'! hats off to the conditioner for doing a top job if that's really what's doing it, but as Clarkey says thats just too cold for the engine :(

...you could always up the horsepower to warm the engine up a little ;)

that green stuff isn't by any chance the stuff Jeff found in that thread he posted the other month?...

i bought funkyboogalooo's car about 7 weeks ago and so do not know any history on the shrek coloured stuff!!

he is no longer on this site but is still on the other.

i find that cheap aftermarket gauges are fairly useless. i've never had one that reads the correct temperature, all too low - possibly due to where the temperature sensor is located.

with my current car, conzult confirms engine at correct temperature, however the aftermarket gauge reeds about 70 to 75 in summer and is currently reading down around 60 to 65 when on a motorway and will creep back up nearer 70 in town

that said yours does seem low, and with it low on the stock gauge too i would suspect the thermostat

all info is greatly received, thank you.

mine are stack gauges as mentioned, are they considered cheap aftermarket, i just dont know?

i never fit them.

i will make sure i get the correct thermostat and not be governed with penny pinching!!!!

with this fitted, the idea is, it will allow the engine to reach optimum temp, the stack should read 180f or so and stock guage will read somewhere slightly above the middle, and as a bonus my cabin will be much warmer, as currently it is only airing it.

i did feel the bonnet and was surprised to feel it was not warm at all!!!

not normal?

i am wittering on and on with this thread and all i have to do is change stat and then see!!!!!!

A further update to this thread.

:slap:

to my great surprise for the first time ever, on monday the temp gauges both worked perfectly, after that though, monday eves, tues and weds morning, etc, it did not work correctly.

however, today, when it was ffffffffreezing this morning, similar to monday, it worked a treat and the temp rose to 175f in no time at all, i was nice and warm for once.

but on my drive home, 2 stops and a, in total journey of 8 miles, it was useless and i was flippin cold as it didnt even reach 100f and the stock gauge never really got any higher than the C, at one stage it even went backwards!!!

:duffer:

It is so intermittant and seems to work better when the car as been left 14 hours and the night temp as dropped to around minus 10.

so roll on tomorrow and lets hope these extreme temps continue!!!!!!!!

a genuine nissan thermostat as been ordered and was £31.00, so not too bad.

thanks for listening!!!

:boat:

just to update this thread and to help others.

i have the nissan genuine thermostat part in my hand.

it was £31.00

is part number 21200 - 42L01

as an opening rating of 76.5

:death:

all indications are that this is the correct one.

i will update once this is fitted which will be within a week.

just another update to this thread.

my new thermostat is now fitted, the old taken out one was a genuine nissan one and i am 99% certain this was the original, this was clearly visible goosed.

having tested it several times before i write, my conclusion is that on my drive home tonight the stock guage needle after only a minute or so is on the move, my stack one does not register until 100f as it starts at 100f but after about 5 mins of running this reaches this 'start' mark. at this point the stock gauge is just below half way, 43 past the hour if you like. this needle now does not move again no matter how long my drive.

:hyper:

the more accurate stack gauge between 5 and 8 mins of running does continue to climb eventually to 165f which equates to 74 degrees celsius, i believe this to be 'spot on', i do have some special green coolant which keeps the temp down so perhaps this is doing its job and taking 10 or 15f off what would be normal had i just neat water in there.

my cabin as a consequence gets nice and warm.

Glad the thermo sorted it

You wont see the stock one go above halfway till your at 100 degrees C
