Failed MAF will cut the revs at 2,500 - if you unplug it (under headlamp panel) and it still runs the same, that's the culprit... try cleaning the plug, may clear it. Probably also worth doing an ECU diagnostic - do a search on here for instructions... pretty simple, just need to remove the panel under the passenger footwell.

Hey nicci You have the vented headlight panel dont you.

Has it been raining where you are?? You might have water on the maf??

yeh got the vented panel, plz someone tell me what a MAF is lol

A maf is a mass air flow meter. It measures how much air is going into your engine.

This is underneath the headlight panel. just behind the the air filter you cannot miss it :)

Basically if the nose panel is vented it can let the rain in. The rain then wets the air filter that then wets the gizmo in the airflow meeter and that then confuses the engine about how much air it is sucking in. Basically the MAF of AFM has a little heater coil in it that the engine management computer tries to keep at a steady temperture. The amount of current to do that changes with the amount of air that comes in. So more air means more current and that way the engine ecu knows how much fuel to feed it. When it gets wet it gets cold naturally and it thinks no air is being breathed in and then gives the engine no fuel or the wrong amount. The ECU decides there is a fault and then puts the engine into "get you home" mode which won't let the engine rev past about 2500rpm as already mentioned.

Worth opening the nose panel, take off the filter and check for wetness, try a hair drier on the MAF if all is wet.

thanks :) do you think it would be worth putting the other panel back on then until the summer time when the weather is better

if its J-spec i'd say 97ron is best or 99 with mod's

Agree its probably the Maf, as your panel is vented it will suck up moisture.

Clean the internal bit of the maf with some Ambersol contact cleaner and also the connectors.

^ as above - with my old vented panel mine used to cut out but only under fairly hard accelleration at about 4000rpm. the problem has been greatly reduced with my new one.
