Hi All,

Can someone help me to speed up my computer. I have 64 processes running and I think a lot of them can be stopped. Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers.

what version of windows are you using? im running XP still, I have 45 processes and thats still way too many!

You should be on Windows 7 by now mate! Speed and performance of XP, looks of vista. Works really well.

i see everyone has failed to ask the most fundamental of computer tech help questions.

Processor?

Ram?

Hard drive space?

Operating system?

Depending on these factors depends how to help speed it up, usually a good start is cleaning out all the crap, stick it on a disk defrag over night, that should speed it up slightly, then the only other option to be looking at, is upgrading. depending on what system you have.

Also, would depend on what you have starting up, this is also a contributing factor to PC speed problems, and (most people dont know this) but the amount of icons on your desktop also plays an important part in the system speed.

So first things first.

What processor do you have, and whats its rated speed?

What RAM do you have? is it SDRAM / DDR / DDR2

How much ram do you have?

Whats its rated speed? ( if you know how to tell this)

How much crap is on your hard drive?

How much free space is left?

And last but not least, what Operating system have you got + service packs if any?

A computer is only as fast as its slowest component. so might be time for an upgrade.

Well you see most of us do it for a job, so we kinda cant be assed to type all of those questions everytime.

Funny that, because thats what i do for a job, but if you dont ask, how are you going to help with limited information?

No point someone going "my PC is slow", and you say "download Ccleaner", when they could be running windows 98se, with 128meg of sdram, with a 5gig hard drive thats crammed full of programs to make it run fast, and they're adding another one to the mix, is there, only real solution for something like that is to upgrade to a faster computer.

If you dont ask the simplest of questions how are you supposed to help the poor guy out based on incomplete facts?

For a start, running 64 processes would tell me he is running vista (he could be running xp, with alot of crap admittedly). As everyone knows, Vista runs 52 processes standard from a fresh install, unless you tweak it yourself and shut down services. So from those 64 bit processes, it would tell me he only installed 12 of those which comes down to the fact that he more than likely only needs to wipe of temp files, clear a few caches, fix the registry. That is why i said download Malware bytes. That good enough explanation? (Level 1 entry)

no-one is going to be running 98se on a dinosaur like that if he is i think he might have had a clue his pc is old and wants throwing in the bin. Even if he is running 98se on the spec you say there is no reason it should be slow either, because that spec is all thats needed to run 98se. ccleaner is always worth a go then take it from there

youre right vodkashots, but i made the assumption from the fact that he didn't say "ive just bought a computer and its slow" to be that his computer has slowed down over time, therefore a build-up of shite software, temp files, registery problems, etc. :)

So going on your analogy, if i gave you the mileage of my "other car" you would know what engine i have?

I run vista on my laptop, xp on the desktop, and i do indeed still have a system running windows 98se for all the old dos games.

My Vista is running 109 processes. Xp was cleaned up about 2 months ago, due to running with over 150 processes after start up and some of these i didnt need, and my windows 98se under full load can run over 135 processes.

If you have a lot of unwanted or stupid programs starting up this number could be anything.

A slow running computer with only 64 processes on it, sounds to me like its hardware restricting it, and not the OS.

256 Meg of SDRAM a 166mhz Pentium is enough to run 135 processes on windows 98se with out slow down.

Would also depends what he means by slow. slow in computers is a bit random, it could mean its slow on start up, slow doing things, slow at multitasking, Slow at playing games shall i go on?

Im not fishing for an argument, i just find it funny how if your trying to help someone with a computer issue, yet failed to ask the most important questions.

He could need to just do a simple thing like delete a few unneeded programs, or upgrade ram, until he posts back with answers to the questions i asked, everyone is still on a guessing game.

Sorry guys and thanks so far. It is a brand new Dell Netbook as described below:

210-26814 Inspiron 1010 : Atom Z530 (1.6GHz,533MHz,1G RAM) 1 189.55 189.55 S

200-61398 N10M1004 1 S

370-14091 Memory : 1024MB 533MHz DDR2 Dual Channel 1 S

400-15898 Hard Drive : 160GB Serial ATA (5400RPM) 1 S

490-11030 Graphics : Integrated Intel Graphic Media Accelerator 500 1 S

619-18499 Operating System : English Windows XP SP3 (32Bit OS) with Recovery CD 1 S

630-12198 Software : English Microsoft Works 9.0 with Home and Student Trial 1 S

The thing is, there are loads of SCVHOST applications etc. I just need to know which ones to get rid of.

Cheers.

Then your problem is, since you got it from Dell, they install tons of crap on there, tons of software trials etc etc!! In my opinion its easier to wipe the laptop clean! Otherwise you will have to uninstall all of the trailware, and you will still be leave with crap on the system which you dont want!
