Had a strange problem when arriving at work the other day, as i pulled into the car park the Diff Oil Warning light and the Lights warning light on the instrument panel lit up.. They won't go away and I can't figure out what could be causing both these to light up!

My rear bulbs and brake lights are fine and my diff oil is also ok.. I;ve checked the little black box in the drivers side rear light which the Lights warning is linked to and re soldered all the joints in case there was a dry one!

Any thought's would be much appreciated!

Problem went away for about a month then when it rained it came back so guessing water is getting in there somewhere.. Diff oil fine and full tho and no over heating problems as if the lights come on, they come on from cold. Just gonna take the dash bulbs out i think!

does the battery light come on too?

No mate and also had a new battery last december. One intresting thing that happens is if I almost stall the car then the light's will go out and do not come back on. Got a 6 puk paddel clutch so can happen from time to time!

Ok the circuit supply to the diff, lights alert and the battery charge light are all shared and hence when you almost stall the engine the alternator output reduces and so the warning lights go out.

Check the fuse marked "engine cont" in the black relay/fuse box on the passenger side inner wing under the bonnet, should be a red 10amp, even if it looks ok fit a new one, these fuses suffer from high resistance as they get on, and this particular circuit is very sensitive to that.

If that fails to sort the issue then look to the fuse box in the driver footwell, the circuits split here and high resistance connections here can cause the same problem, maybe the typical rain water ingress issue.

The cause is directly or related in some way to one of those two area`s no where else, and for those who do not know, the diff light is unique to the UK zeds imports do not have a cooler /pump/ sensor fitted so hence no warning light.

As a side note:

The "engine cont" fuse issue can also play with the alternators ability to produce a correct charge output, alternators can mistakingly thought to be faulty when they are not, although the charge light may go out you may want to check the voltage at the battery with the engine running.

Cool stuff! Top man Jeff, thanks very much for all that info. Will check the engine cont fuse on my next day off. I've already check the drivers footwell and it's not damp what so ever but will check all the fuses just in case...

The fuse box in the drivers footwell needs removing to check correctly as if there is an issue with it, it will be around the backside.

Keep an update going so we can get it resolved for you, if you get stuck call me at the workshop so I can talk you through it.

Ok Jeff thank you will do. Had to remove fuse box behind drivers footwell last year when the aircon relay packed up so maybe I disturbed something putting it back. Will give you a shout if I get stuck tho!

Ok though i'd better update this thread as I fixed it a while a go now.. Basically my targa drain tube became disconect from behind the drivers fuse box so water was getting in and dripping all over the relays and fuses... Replaced the drain tube, dryed out the fuse box and the diff light and lights problem has now gone!!
