Hi guys,

As the title says, I want to buy a 300ZX but I don't know how much I should be paying for one, or what to look out for.

I have found one to look at... It's an import on a K plate, has done 80k, and he tells me that it's a short wheel base model, twin turbo with a chip so it (apperently) runs 380ish bhp. Other than that, its boggo standard.

How much should I be paying for this car?

This model also has the removable roof. Do these leak?

Also what does 'slicktop' mean?

Any help would be appriciated....

Cheers, Maz

Hi Maz and welcome to the club.

A short wheelbase TT is usually worth a bit more than a 2+2, but its more a case of what its worth to you, prices can vary from 3k upwards but have a search on the usual car sale sites to get an idea

Occasionally targa seals have deteriorated over the years, some leak some dont, but there are certain fixes to prevent it happening

Slicktop means a solid roof ie no glass panel targas, the advantages are no leaks and more rigidity and lighter

Hi Graham,

Thanks for the welcome. Decided i wanna buy one after driving my mates one!

Just quickly, bearing in mind that the car is more or less mint, would £4000 be too much to pay, or should i be looking around the £3250 mark?

Thanks, Maz

Seems a fair price, but do check the suspension, cooling system condition, any signs of smoke be it black or blue, these are often overlooked but can add alot to the price of the car if they need replacing.

Check for any kinds of leaks and make sure its not using oil or water, it should be solid over bumps if its stepping out at the rear it could indicate bushes, check the steering is tight and doesnt have any play as the bushes and UJ joints are expensive.

Also bear in mind insurance is generally higher on an import so get some quotes first, good luck.

Welcome to the Club mate :)

£4k is not alot to pay for a good zed! However we cannot possibly pass judgement or give an informed opinion with so little details.

Is it for sale? Have you got a link?

Cheers,

Isaac

If its mint, i would say £4k is a good buy, have seen a few go for well above that, which were mint, or claimed to be lol

Please either check it over thoroughly or have it checked over properly, it may look mint to the eye, but you need to check the underside, bushes, any rust or accident damage etc..

peace of mind more than anything

Good luck and get some pics up if and when you get it

Cheers

Graham

Hi Maz

Where are you because several of the club members are prepared to inspect a car for new buyers/members

All the best and welcome

Hi guys, thanks for all your advice.

Beermonster, thank you for the tips, and with regards to insurance, i'm pretty familiar with import prices as I also own an R34 GT-T Skyline! That's bad enough, but I can't bear to get rid of it!

ZX eyes, sorry i don't have a link as it's a friend's dad who is getting rid of it, as his wife won't let him keep it in the garage any more. Worth mentioning that it has been garaged for the last 18 months. As soon as i get some more details, I will let you all know.

Groover, thank you again mate. Will be sure to put pics up before any money changes hands.

Cheers, Maz

TonyB, I'm based in south london, (wimbledon area), but the car is way up north past birmingham!

If its been stood for 18 months, get an oil and filter change, check all fluids and check the tyres, it may have created flat spots with being sat so long, you may need a new battery

Well give us some more details and maybe a pic or two and hopefully some of us can give an informed opinion for you :)

You may still want to tell us where it is as if someone is close enough they may well have a goosey gander at it for you :)

Found a another zed to look at as the initial one wasn't any good. Is anybody around south London to give me pointers on what to look out for? All I know is that the exhaust is blowing on it.

as i say to all take your time and make sure you get what you want.

be prepared to travel and ask a lot of questions, build up your knowledge.

you get what you pay for, mine was over 5k and after 4 months of ownership and me doing no mechanical work it sailed through its mot with no advisories!!!
