Hi Mate, welcome to the club.

To answer your question, Yes the gear boxes WERE reliable 15/20 years ago when the vehicles were new, but after years of abuse/ wear and tear you will find the most boxes will have had work done to them! but once maintained correctly, you could have years of trouble free usage.

I have had 4 gearboxes over the last 7 years of 300zx driving, BUT i have boosted the power of my car and the power seems to shread the boxes

You will find many great repair garages on this forum one being `zed world` who would be happy to fix /repair auto boxes

I still drive happily with 2 of my cars with the auto box in perfect working order

regards Daz

Mine was auto up until a few weeks ago and the whole time i owned it, it was 100%. But you do hear of a lot of problems with them, but as Daz says that's what happens when they get so old and what not.

Just check it out properly before you buy :)

My car is 20 years young and is on orginal box as im aware. But the car has only done 50 odd thousand miles.

:headvswal

My auto box going pop the day I collected my new 300zx tt LWB is well documented on this forum but it was all down to a lack of maintenance by the last owner. The original had only done 47k miles. The reconditioned replacement has done over 80k miles and is driving beautifully.

There are uprated coolers you can have installed and you should regularly check the separate autobox oil dipstick to see the condition of the gearbox oil (located right at the back of the engine bay). Sniff the dip stick and check for signs of burning or very black oil which could indicate overheating or premature wear inside the box.

Most of all - if you are unsure at all - use a good specialist to help you. I cannot recommend Jeff over at Zedworld highly enough. What this man does not know about keeping your Zed on the road isn't worth knowing. Very knowledgable and great impartial advice.

As long as you are as religious as you say about your auto servicing schedule then you should really have no more problems than with any other Jap manufactured item. However I do agree with some of the other guys here that they are not really designed to run much bigger power figures than stock. That is when you start to get problems.

140k miles when my UK TT one finally pooped its autobox. Not that bad in terms of reliability on a turbo charged sports car. It was stock however and like others say if you chip them and up the boost and then use that for lots of fast standing quarter miles on a drag strip the box will not last long. JDM ones often need a bigger autobox cooler adding for a start if into driving hard.

if you get an Auto you'll save money..........................................never need a new clutch!!!!

Thanks for all the advice if and when i DO buy a Z23 auto i will fit an extra transmission oil cooler just to help things a bit:) I like the idea of a TT but may go for a none T dont fancy blowing turbos :( what sort of power can you extract out of a none T model with simple extra mods

Cheers,

Chas.
