My advice is do what my brother did when he started playing. Get a cheap strat squire copy with a practice amp, a cheap £100 effects box and that should last you a year or so and by then you'll start to know whether it's worth spending more or not.

Learn to play tabs and scales and you'll be laughing.

I have a Burns Marquee S in Green (Gaz Combes Supergrass special) and the brain may Red Special which are beautiful guitars but my brother has 10 all in all including a one off hand made electro acoustic, les paul studio in cherry red, a gretch and two ibanez.

Have a search for TABs mate on google or whatever. Its the easiest way to learn guitar IMO. Its basically 6 lines and numbers on them and the numbers relate to which fret you hold down. Simples :D

Like so.....

If you're after summit cheap to see if its for you, my dad deals catalogue return guitars for a living so lemme know if maybe i can help :)

Isaac

Anyone can learn anything, just depends on the individuals aptitude.

I was lucky, i started early, had my first band at 13 and have been pro for about 25 years, i seemed to have a natural ability, some people find it hard, but it depends on how much time you want to put into learning and practising

This is easier than tab, shows where to put your fingers and the shapes

I wouldn't call myself a guitarist but I do (try) play, I would recommend a yamaha 112m if you're just starting out, it's what I have and it's been a pleasure learning on it, good pick ups, fret board or neck whatever it's called lol is good shape, although the whammy bar has become noisy after changing strings not sure why but otherwise overall great value for money.

just looked at the yamaha very nice

sorry if this is a really stupid question (i am clueless) but all the different sounds different guitars make like jimi hendrix, slash, van halen, brian may is this down to them tuning them differently or is there different types of electric guitars (sorry for all the different's i didn't know off any other way to get my point across )

Its all about effects mate. So you can get good amps which allow alot of effects or you can buy pedals to do it.

Bare in mind tho they don't make you play like Hendrix :p :D

Ive been playing about 2 years now, and have got really, really good. I first started on an Xbox 360 with guitar hero and then progressed to playstation 3 with rock band. To be honest and being modest nobody in my house can keep up with me. Took me a while to get used to the different colour buttons on the long arm bit that sticks out of the plastic flat bit but I got there in the end.

This was me when I first started. Much better now

Keep at it for at least 1 - 2 hours a night and in due time you will be able to play it really well. Ive been playing keyboards since 11 years old and im still playing now, but im going down the piano route, learning some cracking pieces, learning phantom of the opera at the moment :D

Anyway its effects that make the guitar sound different. Obviously some guitars sound different to others but they are minor differences really its the effects that make the real difference.

Pedals are a whole world on their own :D

Nowadays you dont even need hardware amps I just plug my guitar in the pc and use Amplitube. And the 112m is a good all rounder from blues to heavy metal. ;)

I generally dont bother picking it up from one week to the next, but when i first started, many moons ago, i practised for hours everyday.

My dad was a professional drummer for a very long time many moons ago and not long ago he started getting back into it all. For the last couple of years he has stopped watching TV of an evening and practises drums from 8pm to midnight everyday!!!!! He has me buying all kinds of weird and wonderful drumming DVDs and he learns all kinds of things! Really got his passion back for it all

I kinda get alot of musical talent from him (without wanting to sound big headed) but i have no real desire to learn properly. I love guitars and collect them and buy and sell them but i just don't really have any driving force to play them full on. Weird huh!

well i have owned guitars for some 33 years, but do not practice enough, for somebody starting out i would say book yourself some lessons.

Ditto, unless i feel my playings lacking something, my parents really had a ear bashing when i was a teen! and as for effects..it`s all in the fingers,if you feel it, it`ll come through.Finding a cool sound or something that signifys you is important to develop,i always get asked what am i doing or what was that little sound, n to be truthful, i never really am that aware. You`ll get that from absorbing yourself and lots of playing.Get some lessons, try a teacher that will show you what YOU want n not an egotist.Have fun. :nana2:

I still love playing live, but doing it for a living does have a different agenda than it used to, used to spend hours learning riffs and shredding, which is all well and good knowing how to do it, but it depends on the music you play, to whether its relevant, still rewarding when youve learnt a difficult piece and pull it off well.

Practicing is easier if you are listening too or learning music you are into.

Amplitude is my current DAW guitar effects unit of choice (with iZotopeTrash coming in second...if it's good enough for Butch Vig it's good enough for me ;)). One of the main fuzz effects that will be featuring on the next album I made from scratch using Amplitude 2...it's sounds naaaaasty... :wack: :D

I use Reason, brill bit of software :)

The guitar is a musical instrument : If you can`t play an acoustic , no amount of effects will make you sound better . Learn the rudiments of the guitar first . Don`t imagine your heroes can`t ( or couldn`t ) play acoustically : they can ! Walk before you try to run . Good luck though , mate , it`s a nice thing to have in your life :D
