Ok not exactly a new topic but a good example of crank pully failure presented itself here.

With the engine running there was an awful knocking sound from low down at the front of the engine, with the engine switched off a quick inspection did not immeidiately reveal anything.

However with it running the area where the noise was coming from was more obvious but then its suddenly stopped making any noise, weird, revving up the engine however reproduced the sound again and it was spotted.

The picture below shows what it looked looked like from below when there was no nasty noises.

After tracking it to the pully, a bit of pressure applies showed the inner damper section was loose, see the outer ring markings where it had rubbed on the front engine/ oil pump cover.

Much clearer now its removed from the engine, you can see how the inner vibration damper had completely detached and moved within the outer pully section in comparison to the good pulley on the left.

So easy for parts like this to get overlooked as on the face of it they seem to last forever..but they do not.

bloody hell. jeff whats your opinions on the underdrive pulleys. are the cheaper ones ok or not?

Well firstly the cheaper ones are to be avoided for many reason not least the poor quality and fit.

From the point of view of servicing. fault finding and reliability I am a genuine Nissan addict, I know I tend to labour this point but it is my real world daily work on these cars view.

Timing checking is often compromised by the after market pulleys sometimes not even having a set point on them, others which do are not always acurate.

Its easy to fall for the hype with aftermarket engine parts and in all honesty I would imagine if an otherwise standard zed had a lightened /underive pulley fitted I doubt any difference would be noticeable, as part of a big build with complimenting parts maybe.........or just give me genuine Nissan any day:D

Hi Jeff,

Your email caused a wee frown!

Just fitted an intake and mongoose and following a 120k service this coming week I was going to look into the ECU options.

I'm about to have these fitted and err, given your note, should I expect nothing and/or pain from this mod given that I'm not even at stage I yet?

Many thanks, Alex

Alex, well "pain".... not really and "nothing"..... quite likely, the ecu options will give you the very best "bang for your bucks" and will keep you more than happy with the extra performance, fitting other parts at this point will...not.

:D

Thanks Jeff, the best thing I can do now then is have them fitted and see it as a performance placebo - that way it'll be incredibly effective won't it :nana2: oh yeh!

Btw, do you have any new PCV hoses? i.e. a full set without the valves? Alex

So are you confirming what Jeff has just said ... or are you way up the mod scale and getting some benefit?

Alex & placebo :D

I bought these ones.. if nothing else they look nice lol

Alex & placebo :D

I think going by what Jeff has said and from seeing Madmax's spec list, they'll probably have some benefit.

:DSo, I took that placebo and it's amazing!

But seriously, I've just picked my Z up from Silverbullet who kindly did the 120k service, timing belt and UD pulley etc today - and I have never heard my Z growl before. Not kidding!

Now, I might have been driving a bit like an old man for the past few months, not knowing the condition of the timing belt and all, so today was a chance to get a glimpse of how well the intake, mongoose, ALC, new plugs and pulleys all work together.

The truth really be told, I think I might have been hanging on at one point  yet I'm far from complaining...more please

Mark commented that he thought it was fairly quick, and now I can agree - sod the placebo me thinks. I've asked a certain JeffTT to give her a bit more ooommmmffff at the weekend (or me another pill) and then that'll keep me smiling for quite some time I'm sure.

Btw, I've no problem recommending Mark for this kind of work, he's plenty experienced, professional and a good listener to boot. Thanks a lot Mark! :hyper: Given what he's done to his 500zx, working on mine was obviously just a mild stroll in the park I'm sure.

Beginning to feel like the investment is starting to show it's face now :hyper:  :hyper: ... ok, ok, all you 400hp+ peeps out there yawning, "just another newbie on the edge of stage-yawn-1"
