I wouldnt know were to start i wouldnt even attempt something like this , without sounding harsh i guess you may not have done it before. if not good attmept.

Yeah, i moved it bud. The Regional forums are predominantly for posting meets and events.

 

I'd imagine, since Robert gave you some instruction, this is your first attempt at welding. Put it this way, i got taught welding when i was doing my apprenticeship and well, my MIG welding is still worse than yours! lol.

I've never even attempted to MIG weld before, some of that welding is Robert's handiwork (the good bits). :D

 

It does feel solid though, after some seam sealer and underseal has been applied, it should look and be up to MOT standard (I hope).

I dont want to seem negative but looking carefullly at your repair it seems to me that you are only about 50% welded. Looking from the back particularly there is a lack of weld penetration . Looking from the front there are substantial areas where you have no weld at all.

If you are replacing a hole in a plain sheet of metal you need to have 100% continuous weld at full penetration to achieve the original strength and integrity of the panel.

That work would IMO fail an MOT inspection.

yea unfortunatly i agree with pete if you aint welded before its a dam good effort but if i tested that motor id fail it no question

I agree, grind back and re weld. Grind a little groove where you want the weld. This helps when your learning, the weld is easier to get where you want it.

Also it looks like you have the welder on too high or you didnt go quick enough. Try a lower setting, the steel is thin enough to lower the welder. Hope all works out. If you want to cheat put some epoxy steal stick over the weld and then paint when set. This is not the best way to go about things but if your happy the weld is strong the steel stick will hide the weld if untidy.

I'll give it another bash, hopefully my welding skills will improve as I go along :)

Looks like you are begining to pick it up, but I would agree that you would be better grinding it back and ensuring you get a complete weld. Any gaps or holes will create a weak point in the structure, that if any flex is present in the panel will end up fracturing.

 

Like I said on Sunday you really want the metal of the two panels to melt and flow into each other, and not just put a run of welding wire down on top of them.

 

Probably best to have some more practice on those scrap bits of metal. There should be plenty of wire and gas!

 

Though as you pointed out, it is a totally different thing once you get onto the car.

 

Just wait till you get to the upside down welding :D
