Hello, good mornin...and welcome.

Will be taking a trip with the zed and the missus up your way in the next few weeks, can you recommend things we really should see above all others, or cool roads to drive etc, we only have a week, she wants to see edinburgh and i want to see glasgow again, will be going to john o`groats and drivin across the top, but would really appreciate some local knowledge as she`s dreamt of visiting for ages and would like to make it special for her. Cheers in advance! :)

there is the A85 which is from perth to either oban or fort william, its one hell of a road long straights tight corners and a good view.

well from glasgow your about 2 and a half h ours to aberdeen, on the way there is dundee. The aberdee road, once past dundee has nice views(if a nice day) just basically a straight road tho so mibi not the best driving experience.

A85 did that road 18 months ago as far as oban great drive and views

yeah this is a great drive my mate comes from near oban we were up there not long ago in his prodrive scooby was a good weekend

driving to john o`groats and "across the top" is a big drive. If you go round the top and back down to Ullapool you will get some fantastic roads and scenery. Petrol stations are rare up there so plan your stops - don't expect to find much super unleaded! And we're talking sheep on the road and single track with passing places. Oh, and take pictures to make us all jealous :)

it`s ok i`m a uk car, 95 will do fine! plus i get quite good mileage out of mine 30+ if i`m off boost n cruising.Sounds like it`s gonna be fun!

:nana2:

You wont be off the boost much between John O Groats and Laxford Bridge. Its a great run, but mainly single track and you will constantly be up and down the gears. Ive done it a few times now, but never in the Z.

Fill up in Inverness, top up in Wick then hopefully you can get back down to Ullapool for a small top up before heading back to Inverness. The cost shouldnt be too bad then!, Just dont fill up at any of the small local filling stations or you will have to leave one of your kidneys with them.

The roads from Laxford Bridge South will leave a huge smile on your face. Once you hit Inverness it's either the A9 south the quick way (but a few speed cameras, and unmarked cars), I would recommend the A82 down the side of Lochness and onto Fort William and Glencoe.

TBH If you are tied to a week its going to be rushed especially if you want to do Edinburgh and Glasgow. You could easily spend a week or two touring the North and North West Coasts. I love the area and used to go up once or twice a year touring and camping.

If It was summer (as you are going to John O Groats) I would highly recommend the trip over to Orkney with the bus tour. but the sea was bad enough when I went over a couple of Augusts ago so I dont think they will do it in October November.

Thanks guys, really looking forward to this trip, just in the process of finding accommodation now, what are the daylight hours up there now?
