i currently have car insured as a automatic and wish to fit a manual conversion kit. I looked at price comparisons and filled ouot a new claim with the gearbox modification option... pretty much all of the companies came back with "we do not support thsi type of mod"

whats the best way of doing this? obviously i can't get away with just insuring the car as a manual so my next option is could i change the car details with DVLA or something to make it a manual car on paper thus insuring it as a manual simply?

how did you lot get around this?

cheers all

why not just leave it? Pay less on insurance on an auto i think anyway. I see plenty of people on ebay selling cars with engine swaps who never bother changing it. Normally with corsa's hehe.

iv got mine insured through elephant and they didnt have a problem with it being changed to a manual just went down as a modification but i did take modification cover so dont know if that made the difference

Insurance will use any excuse to wriggle out of paying in the event of a claim, so my advice would be to change the details on the V5 with DVLA and then explain to the insurance its a conversion, not a modification.

If your company wont budge, then its time to change companies to a better one ! Someone who is maybe more tailored to this type of car ?

Good luck,

Alan.....................

My V5 document doesn't state manual or auto.

When I converted mine, I informed Adrian Flux about the change, they added it to the details, but it made no difference to my premium and this was at renewal time!

NB - I threw that bit in after I was given a price.

deffo declare it as a mod made to cover your own back. if your insurers wont cover you then tell them to fook off and shop around mate. you'll probably find yourself a cheaper quote too.

my V5 doesnt say anything about transmission either

nor does mine i just checked now. the thing is i looked at DVLA website and the list of things you must inform them about like engine displacement changes etc does not include transmission anywhere.

How would insurance find out if it was an auto?

the thing is i though a transmission mod would be things like fitting paddle shift, making gears bigger etc, and that technically this is not a mod as it is a standard manual gearbox and just a swap. surely if the V5C does not need to know then insurance dont need to know?

i'm confused lol

cheers for the advice from you and everyone :) i am going to have to ring insurers later i guess :)

I did pay them up front and they told me how much ill get back if i cancel (6 months worth) and it is quite an amount. they did offer to change the claim to another car (abviously want the money) and so maybe i can get them to accept this change and they can keep my money for another 6 months
