Upgrade bulbs (Uk & jap) 100 watt

Ok seems a little confusion has arisen (various posts) about soldering leads on to bulbs etc. Not wanting to tread on toes etc but I buy them wholesale and can do a good deal on them if (are on my site under elec upgrades) I will be at the Birmingham meet if any one wants to buy them already to go, will be at other meets too.

I have seen the light - purrraZe bee tis a glorious miracule!

I soldered my 130watt bulbs and the solder started to melt after a couple of minutes and now I cant see anything.

Bugger!

Also see you are doing shox!

Can you recommend a decent rear set to help to cure my arse wobble.

Mine are shot and I'll happily put my business your way bud smile.gif

Glen, you should have read my post about 100w bulbs the other day !

You need to use different solder and heat shielded cable. I am not 100% convinced that this is either wise or safe due to the heat build-up in the headlights, or the current draw on the relays.

Damn I just bought a pair of 100w H3's and was going to do the mod this weekend now I'm sure it worth the hassle. Different solder, heat shielded cable, jeez better stick with the 2 candles propped up on the bumper.

If you want proper JAP bulbs rated at safe 85Watt, then add your name to the topic JAP BULBS. I wont be ordering until I have 5 pairs ordered.

So far I do not have enough orders to warrant the outlay.

Leigh.

Well I will have an extra set if you are one short mate, and perhaps post it in general for more response smile.gif

Is it not possible to strap an foooking great earth to the chassis of the headlight unit to act as the earth instead of soldering it to the bulb itself??

GLen

Is the problem of overheating the 100w bulbs actually down to the earth wire then?

No - it's down to running a 1 bar electric fire in a small plastic box with no airflow ! biggrin.gif

So running 100w bulbs in the 300 is not possible if you want them to last and also not cause some other damage? Now I'm confused cos the way that previous topics/posts/faq's on the subject were written made me think it would be ok and that people had done it and were happy. Obviously these people were not running 100w bulbs but 55w or 85w then.

A number of people running 100w bulbs have mentioned that they frequently blow and several people have noticed that they get hot enough to melt regular solder (>180 deg C!). I measured the temp of the headlight casing and IMHO it gets too hot (>70 deg C after 20mins on a cold night). There is an improvement in the light, but it's certainly nowhere near double. The main problem with our lights is not the quantity of light, but the direction in which it is sent by the reflectors.

Is it the same for both Uk and imports?
