Ordered a new Passat, waiting for confirmation, but just thought I'd check out the MK6 Astra which has just been launched. Now I priced one of these up on Vauxhall website to see what a middle-spec model would cost with the smaller of the 2 diesel engines. So that's an Astra 'SE' 1.7 diesel with metallic paint. Run of the mill, pretty mundane looking, mid-spec.

Guess how much list price is on this car......

Over 21,000!! 21k for an average spec diesel Astra!

Where do these prices come from!?! You can get a new VW Scirocco for that, or even a Passat Highline. 21k for small engined diesel Astra! Totally crazy.

Now I've had loads of Astras and have a bit of a soft spot for them....why...I have no idea, but hell, that's just stupid money!!

why dont you just buy a 2-3year old car........practically no where near the price of new.

Company car. This isn't really about whether to buy new or not, just how expensive something pretty mundane is. VW cars are cheaper. Even a VW Golf GTD is cheaper!

ahhhhhhhhhhh no bother:D!

So your not actually having to buy it then.

But yeah 22k is feekin terrible. Considering puntos are over half that.

  • Author

No, not having to buy it, but will be taxed on its benefit.

Punto is a whole size down. You want to compare a Bravo.

Yup. BMW diesel!!

The ONLY new BMW diesel you'd get for that price would be a 118d. I think not.

:hurl:

How about the new Mazda 6?

Keep seeing these around and think they look great!

Oh no, never mind, I'd rather take the bus than drive a Passat, hideous!

The starting price of the Volvo V70 I'm currently driving is only £22,745 for the estate, or the S80 (saloon) starts at only £21,745!

A lot more car for the money! ;)

I'm very happy with this one... shame I'll have to hand it back at some point :(

I'm looking at the moment as may be changing soonish and need an estate, looking at V50, Alfa 159 Sportwagon and Accord estate.

Volvo salesman was useless, what's the spec like on them?

From a quick look, prety much the same as this V70... http://www.volvocars.com/uk/All-Cars/Volvo-V50/Pages/default.aspx

Theres a 'Build Your Own' on there as well to add in all the extras you want ;)

I've got to admit though that this one I've got has got a few extras fitted. But certainly the ride quality and finish are very impressive, and I'm sure it would be the same on the V50

my mrs has a brand new astra hire car through insurance at moment it's a 1.2, 09 plate and to be honest it's sh!t. Poor visabily, underpowered, airbags everywhere(if you had a crash you wouldn't get out for airbags), plastic, everywhere and door handle's have already come loose and are creaking. Build quality is a bit crap really. If I were in the market I wouldn't pay more than £5k for it dunno what they cost new but bound to be overpriced. Huge on the outside for and astra and no way a crap woman driver could park it due to visability. Also small inside.

Plus points, engine is VERY quiet as is the whole cab. Has aircon and mp3 connection and that's about it.

Not sure quite how this is 'hideous'. I guess everyone's entitled to an opinion even if they are an idiot. ;)
