Tyres - What do you think are the best for the Z???

Transvestites(300z a.k.a. Janine!) & Gentlemen,

In response to Devils' recent post on tyres, what do you think are the best tyres?

My personal choice would be Michelin Pilot Sports, fantastic grip and lovely tread pattern.

What do you think?

I'll probably be a bit unique here and actually suggest tyres which are not the same as the ones I'm using !!!

My recommendation would be Bridgestone SO2s. Currently using P Zeros which, while good, aren't as good as the SO2s.

I had a set of cheap nasty Marshall's on it when I bought it, which seemed to last for quite a while (~10-12K). Handling got pretty dicey towards the end through and wet was a great laugh. Then swapped to Bridgestone S02's -brilliant, fantastic grip and an enormous difference in stability. Howver, these will definitely not make 5000 miles and are pretty expensive - not for those with shallow pockets !

agree with the Potenza SO2's..excellent tyres.

Kumo's 702s are cheap, and are good for 6-10k

you can get 225 40z 16 for 85 BUCKS (us dollars) cheap enough for me =)

Slightly different circumstances, but: a mate of mine recently fitted SO2 Pole Positions to his ~450bhp Supra and swears by them. In his words, the car was a deathtrap on its old boots =)

As for me, I'm still on the Japanese rubber that came with the car... Nankang's, I think they are. Stable enough when its dry but a bit of care needed on wet roundabouts to say the least!

good god droop , eventually i will have to buy a mouse with a scroll button on it as your sigs are son big lol he he he,

well i use bridgestone s02's or re71's or something(i forgot , thats how long ago ive seen my car) and they are really fantastic, i also would not use any other tyre, (and i used to work for tiger wheel and tyre (who had a contract with yokohama lol) and i still swear by bridgestones.

Raz,

Just out of interest, if you're running with the original Jap boots...are they z rated i.e. for speeds upto 150 mph?

Just wondering, considering that the Jap speed restriction is 112 mph?

[-)

yup they are rated z , and you can do 112mph to your hearts content

Mr_Smith,

I've got the Michelin Pilot Sports on mine (they are the new type that came out at the beginning of the year). You're right, they are great BUT I have been told (not only by Warren!) that they generate MUCH more tyre noise than the S02 PPs. I will try the S02s next on my car but I am happy with the Michelins for now, I just can't have a conversation at > 100mph ;-)

Andy

Not a major worry for me at the moment, I still have the speed limiter in place! Or so I was told, anyway - its done nearly 120 (on the track, officer!)...

Raz

i have S02's on mine, and they are much better than the Avon ZZ1's i had before, particularly in the wet.

i have done about 7000 miles on mine, and look to have another 3 or 4000 left i reckon on the backs. the fronts are still good for another 7k i think, if not more...

i dont hang around, and i do corner very hard (Warren will vouch.. ;) so i think there must be some geometry problem if you only get

unless of course, you like to lay the rubber down and powerslide around corners AndyP ;)

MMMmmmm, have just been on the Bridgestone site to have a Frank at those SP02 tyres...lovely jubbly tyre!

How much a pop on standard wheels?

[-)

I'm definitely not a loony on the throttle, but I do corner and brake fairly hard. I usually wear out fronts at the same rate or faster than rears, especially in the 300 as the front is so heavy. I have noticed that the outsides are wearing out marginally faster than the inside, but I put that down to cornering hard. Maybe I'll get the geometry double checked.

You can buy stock size SO2's from about £100 each, if you shop around.

I have them on the back of my NA, and can say they are easily the best tyres I have known, for wet and dry grip!

I have just put my second set of Goodyear Eagle F1's on. Having tried most makes on the car including the original Michelin Mxx most sets last about 9-11k (with the exception of Pirelli 4K) The Eagle F1's have lasted..... believe it or not 19K (they were down to the tread wear markers at 16K) I have been doing a fair bit of motorway driving of late, but only for the last 4-5k. These tyres are the only ones that I have tried that you can drive reasonably fast in the wet and have outstanding dry grip, probably because they are developed from the Formula 1 wet tyre. I haven't tried the Bridgestones, but most people including the guys at Elite reckon there isnt a lot of difference in the road holding.

These have to be the best value for my money at that kind of mileage.

Had to put Fulda Extremos on mine as the bank had already suffered from the Z in previous months.

£80.00 for 17" 255's and they seem OK, certainly better than bald Bridgestones in the wet!

The Bridgestones were going to cost about £190.00 each for rears.

Recent quote from micheldever.co.uk:

225/50/16 z so2 £99.87

245/45/16 z so2 £116.32

These prices are fitted prices inc vat

I have Fulda extremos on the front of my car, and although they were ok when new..now they are half worn, they are crap!

They follow cambers and white lines in the road, and give me very little confidence.

i just bought some toyo proxes t1-s s wednsday they seem fint but havent had much chamce to try them though 245/45/zr16 £111 each look pritty good too

Total price for four Eagle F1 tyres at Elite inc vat £379.23

2x 225x45ZR16

2x 245x45zr16

Toger,

I don't want to piss on your chips but....

I put some Toyo T1Ss on mine in February - On the 8th of April the rears were illegal!!! That means that I got 1500 miles out of a set of rears - keep an eye on them.

The main point I made to the suppliers was that the fronts were hardly touched and the roads had been permanently wet - hence far less wear?!!!

The rears have now gone back to Toyo for investigation - I hope they come back with a 'nice' reply - i.e a cheque!!!!

Its now got Fulda's on the back which seem pretty good. The biggest problem is, mines on 265/35zr18 on the back and 245/40zr18 on the front = loads of money per tyre!!!!!

Like I say, I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but just keep your eye on those rears - you could be illegal before you know it!

I have 265 35/18 rears too. I found that 18s are extremely sensitive to rear toe in. Manual says 0 - 4 mm. I found mine at more like 8 mm toe in. No wonder they disappear before your eyes. The rear Hicas arms were recently replaced but looks like they didnt track it as well. Or else something else is worn but I cant find it. With no give in the sidewalls the tyre scrubs. You have to get them tracked at 0mm toe in to make them last. And check camber too.

Willie

I have Fulda Extremo 285/35/18 and 245/40/18 - absolutely pants. Poor grip, handling, feel etc. Don't touch them even though they are the cheapest in the high tyre size bracket I'm in the process of changing.

I have learned the hard way that tyres are the most important part on a car. It can be the difference between a positive, confident, solid, save drive to driving what feels like 10 bears on a skateboard with no wheels on ice.
