Im interested in a car Clicky which looks good on paper. I've chatted to the owner, he seems like a straight up guy, etc, etc.

 

He informs me that the only current issue with the car, aside from a couple of rust bubbles, is that the overdrive currently isnt working. More specifically, gears 1-3 are fine, but it wont go into fourth. He doesnt recommend I drive it up motorways or A roads accordingly.

 

He knows a guy who works for a transmission specialist who can supposedly fix it for £150-200 who he says would do a very good job.

 

Has anyone experienced this problem before? Does the price sound reasonable (for the fix job)? He says he'll take me to his local track to test the car out, so he cant be hiding any performance related issues, I would have thought.

 

Ideas appreciated

Back to the 'box issue though. It could be a simple electrical fault that is somehow locking out 4th gear; or else the auto 'box could be shot with complete loss of 4th gear.

 

A full auto box rebuild will cost you around 1200 plus VAT for a proper warrantied job.

 

Personally I would not buy a car upon the owner's claim that a repair will "only cost a couple of hundred." I'd get an independent professional opinion before buying.....
