Ok so a change of plan has happened again.

I am fed up with not driving the car whilst I save up for engine rebuild and after not starting it for 3 months my new plan is:

*Fix leaking pipe at rear of engine and start driving around again

*Save up for manual gearbox in the meantime.

*once I have bought the manual gearbox then I will look at saving for engine rebuild and upgrade.

My existing problem is the one I have had since buying the car………. Unknown hesitation under full load at higher speeds of 60+.

When I get this mechanic to change pipes for me is there anything I can ask him to look at? Santa and I noticed that the wastegate seems to be unplugged wrong (or something like that). Other posters having hesitation problems or wastegate problems only mentioned that they could not get extended boost…. Mine seems to attempt this however when the fault occurs it simple judders for a second and then starts to build the boost up again…

Is this normal and what other things should I vigorously check this weekend?

I am desperate to nip this in the bud and have the car running standard for once in my ownership.

Done various tests and balance tests which showed fine and no one on the forums seems to know what is wrong (which can’t be helped as they havnt seen the car)

Please please please help me nip this in the bud once and for all… I am even prepared to travel if someone will look over my car (live in Essex) but this will be in 2 weeks (payday)

Why not take it to zedworld? Im sure they would be able to diagnose and fix the problem and ive heard nothing but good things from them.

Was just about to say the same get a pm together etc, and see if you can book in for when you get payed maybe?

is that in tamworth? ill have to see what the miles will be :)

Yeah Jeff is in Tamworth very knowledgeable with Z's and allot of satisfied customers

can you not think of anyone with a trailer etc?

or use the money you saved so far to hire a tow to get there would prob not be cheap from a firm though

hmmmm.... never done a 3 hour journey in the zed yet with the way it runs ......... might be interesting

  • Author

unfortunatly i know no one with a trailer or anyone that would go that far with me :(

frankly................... i'm stuffed

Santa doesnt think it is a boost leak big enough to warrant this as it only does it at a certain point. it has no problem building boost but if it is on the highest it will go for more than 7 seconds it drops and builds up again. ALmost like the engine stops pulling for a seconds then proceeds to redo the same.

I have tried so manu things and just cant find it... I am worried ill never have this engine run the way it should (like my old zed). Driving in santas made mine feel so underpowered. His felt quicker than mine without using boost :(

also to note although i said it is like the engine is hesitating as opposed to boost i have no problems and a code 55

If you found a way to get it there then i think it will be definatley worth it as you know then the problem will be found.

Ok well as you said there are other things that can cause hesitation but i'm no mechanic, and i'm sure you've checked obvious stuff ie: plugs coil packs maf etc, so i would still say it needs to go to someone who knows the engine well, i understand it's just getting it there at this stage but it would be well worth the trip

I'm sure you will have other replies later on though and sorry i could not be of more help

All of you have been great help and i really want to take it there its just i'm worried about the trip :-( Obviously i must try and bite the bullet but i am hoping that connecting the wastegates or solenoids will fix the problem. although i feel like it won't.

I have already taken the boost jets out that were in there when i purchased it so i am thinking he had a boost controller and didnt connect the pipes when he took it out previous to selling.

argh i wish i had a trailer :( or some friends for that matter

well when i get the water pipes done ill see if the mec notices anything else funny regarding the vac, wasties etc.. maybe i will be lucky and he finds the culprit. If not then il try to get to zedworld (wish they were essex based :)

I hope so mate, or at least if someone local can get it to run a little better and you take it real easy down there to see Jeff, i think it would work out a bit expensive if you where to hire a company to trailer it, and you'd need a big car to tow it there with the proper towing equipthat lifts the front

Just a quick one on the other thread you posted, the tappet noise could be the Hydraulic valve lifters, I’ve noticed on mine once or twice when not used in a long while, fades very quickly though just a bit difficult as you're trying not to really run you're Z at the min as if it is the lifters a good run will normally sort it

ok so apart from battery dead the car ran well before taking it off the road (minus hesitation at higher speed) and so should have no problems running again?

obviusly tapping will commence for a bit but nothing could cause the engine to not run after leaving it for 3 months?

cheers again chris!

after leaving it that time as said I’d still expect the noise to clear especially after a good run batt will be flat if not been charged brakes could be jammed if handbrake left on but should release with some gentle revs, tyres will need checking and I’d check all the fluids 2, but should release with some gentle revs , and cant really see any major issues with the gearbox standing for that period as long as it wasn’t temperamental and the oil is good

but as I’ve learned cars do tend to surprise you though , hope you get it sorted though mate oh and this is what it says on the lifters on Wikipedia

the valve train will rattle loudly on start-up due to oil draining from the lifters when the vehicle is parked for long periods. This is not considered significant provided the noise disappears within a couple of minutes, typically it usually only lasts a second or two. A rattle that does not go away can indicate a blocked oil feed or that one or more of the lifters has collapsed due to wear and is no longer opening its valve fully

it will be great to get the boost or engine (whichever it is) sorted out and the plenum bypass done!

top stuff and cant wait to greet this legend!

I hope you get it sorted mate, will have to meet up when you get it back on the road I am only in braintree

Hi matey,

I had issues with my 300 last year, and took her to Jeff at Zworld to try and get it sorted after seeing many mechs, who claim they know how the 300zx engine works and have worked on many in the past. I spent over £1000 with these, so called knowledgable mechs and nothing. Anyway, went to Zworld and wow!! They spent approx 6-8hrs on my 300 trying to find the issues i had and, guess what......

They done it!!!!!! Got her running fine, and even stayed till 7pm on saturday until it was right. They even offered a cheap b&b, local, to try to sort the problem if it got too late.

Get the ol' girl to Zworld, and you will driving home with the biggest smile on your face buddy.

i already have a smile with the chance of having my car run atleast standard power again as mine is down on power compared to santas standard zed. I will let everyone know how it goes.

my task now is to get the car started and ready for the drive in a couple of weeks :)

after having to stare at my zed the last 3 months i am excited to drive it again !
