Not to replace the Zed, god forbid, but to replace my vectra.

Looking at 01-04 plate and got about 10k to spend. I know nothing about the engines or the E46 series themselves.

So if anyone got any pointers for buying one of these then please point me in the right direction :)

Cheers

Pete

  Nope not StellaZ this time matey boy :D

My pal his the 330d m sport 52plate..............what a machine, i love my bmws and his is fantastic. I think its quite powerful for a diesel, good torque and its good on the diesel for motorway journeys etc.

Thumbs up for me on that one:D!

Not the 3 series, but I have the 530D, pretty sure it will be the same engine.

Its a good engine with plenty of power.

It isnt without its faults though. Ive changed the MAF on mine a common problem apparently. BMW £170- Euro Car Parts £56.

Some of the forums state that the turbos go, no problem with mine as yet touch wood.

And the automatics and lm sure later manuals are fitted with little flaps in the intake manifold which detach and go for a little trip through the engine. Results = new engine required.

Tbh I never really was that much a fan of BMW before, but after this one I am, the build quality is good and it drives well for a 9 year old car with 150000k on the clock. Ive even got used to the bus sized steering wheel now

Are they the same engine in all series throughout all the years ?

I've done about 300 miles in a 2006 530D , and was very impressed with the engine. It pinned you in the back of your seat and held you there, very quick. So much torque, and it did'nt sound or rev like a diesel. I was giving it quite a heavy right foot whenever I got the chance, but still managed 45mpg in it.

The one I drove had 230bhp , 370Ib/ft

Edited by Yowser

* looked up engine code, looks like power/torque varied across the years and model ranges, with it only having 180bhp and 280ib/ft in earlier years - such as the E39 and first E46's

Isnt it the same based engine though (M57) just uprated.

Yeah it is. There was an engine change in 2003 when the 204bhp was brought in.

Cheers for the input guys

I have a 330d Sport Touring and it's pretty good. It's the 2002 184bhp model but mine has been chipped (surprise) and it's now 214bhp, 350ft/lb torque. Does 40-45mpg pretty much whatever I do to it. It does tend to eat rear tyres but that'll be no big shock. Build quality is fair but there are a few spots of rust appearing. It's now done over 134,000 miles but nothing major seems to have broken yet.

i got a bmw 323i alot better on fuel than i expected almost 300 miles to a tank which costs 555 to fill up.

my mums got a e46 320d which does 400 around town and alot of torque ride and build quality for bmw is second to none.

No, not replacing the zed mate. this is the vectra daily driver replacement :)

Great choice, best spec, best engine and best colour for one of these and face lift too.

I take it this wasnt £10k though?

Edit and its also law to not have the roof down and the windows up, unless your a girl. Or a man with girly hair
