Hello everyone, just joined the site.

I have a 1989 (first of the new gen models) Twin Turbo Auto swb import.

After driving the car for approx 2 miles the hicas warning light comes on, the steering goes heavy and the speedo mph arrow stops working (goes to 0)

Does anyone know how to remedy this fault?

Thanks

Welcome

This problem typically occurs when the Hicas system gets abnormal signals from the steering.

Do you have an aftermarket or a stock steering wheel ?

If you have aftermarket steering wheel then sounds like you have a non-hicas Steering Boss fitted to it ?

or if you have a stock steering wheel then sounds like its not on straight ?

If the speedo stopped then its dry solder joint on the back of the speedo it self. Also check the speed sensor on the gear box.

ah, I missed the bit about speedo not working. As said this is either an issue with your speed sensor, Mph>kph convertor (if you have one), or a speedo circuitboard dry joint.

Can be the actual speed sensor itself that is at fault here! Not always the speedo cluster stuff. As the car thinks its not moving (0mph) there will be no Power steering fluid being pumped around (obviously as it thinks its not moving so not needed) and is the result of your heavy steering. Is alot quicker and easier to check than solders at the back of the cluster. Check the connector is in and not full of s**t

If not then move on to the Speedo Cluster :)

Its usually the speed sensor or a Mph > KPH convertor issue, thats why I listed them first.

Thanks guys, you have all been a big help here.

I will get some photos of the car on here soon. Just been fitting a few bits and bobs to the car, now has a Stillen spoiler which looks first class.

Thanks again
