I have 300zx but this is about my pajero. If you know about E markings on tyres, could you check this thread out and tell me if an E9 R106 tyre is road legal?

I'm at me wits end with what is legal and not, I've phoned the cops, VOSA and the supplier and still can't get any proof to show my MOT guy :(

No idea, but if I was you I would just take it to different mot tester.

i know but i'd have to he full money again rather than a free retest and it grates a bit when i think they are ok :/

Can't you stick some normal tyres on it to get it MOT'd and then change them back? Just borrow someone elses if you havent any?

 

Regarding the tyres though, Im sure they're road legal. Many a truck out there running Insa Turbos, but also, they are legal in the RTV (Road Tax Vehicle) class in offroad trialing. Tell them to stop being so pedantic!

What is the exact reason he gives for failing the tyres? ( written on the VT30)

 

What are the markings on the tyre? is it marked not for highway use, and if it is, is there another number adjacent to the E number?. Sounds like he got a bit confused to be honest.....and deffinately he shouldnt be asking a traffic cop (who will not have much knowledge of MOT matters) he should consult the testing manual.

 

I think you should ask him to read section 4.1 of the inspection manual. In particular the left hand column with regards to tyres marked "not for highway use".

 

"Tyres with NHS, not for highway use should only be deemed acceptable if they display an E marking and a number contained within a circle. Adjacent to this circle the sidewall must also be marked with a number ie 75R-002439"

also note the "for example E11", i.e, not "it must say E11 with no other number"!

i havent got a doubt about it being E certified. the link i put up on the paj forums is what the MOT garage should go by, and it says the E has to followed by by 75R

 

my tyres have R106

 

but he may be like 'ok the E numbers fine but by the letter of the law it doesnt say R75 after that E'

 

so i guess it all hinges on wtf R106 is all about?

Do your tyres have 4X4 off road on them, or 4X4 off road use only ?

That makes a huge difference, if its only "4X4 off road" then he has incorrectly failed it. If this is the case tell him that you have contacted VOSA for advice, ask him to re-read the manual.....and more importantly remind him that it is 20 disciplinary points for each item incorrectly failed.

 

If after this he still refuses to pass it contact your local VOSA Office.
