i have a 91 tt auto import

it is supposed to have been converted to mph and i have an old speedo face with my documents. i have also noticed that there is what must be a speed converter soldered on to the back of the clocks.

the speedo seems to over read in proportion to the speed by around 20%

i have checked the speed sensor on the box and fixed that (made no difference)

the speedo also seems to suddenly drop to zero at speeds below 10mph aswell.

i did notice however a few weeks ago whilst crusing at about 80 that it was showing the correct speed. is this going to be dry connections?

also will using the speed converter that is fitted cause issues withe the power steering hicas and auto box?

ps the auto box is going in a few weeks

The cheap ebay delimiter boxes can cause the problems you have described, Sometimes you can get a good one and have no problems, but the odd one slips through.

I had the same problem with one i had fitted, speedo wouldnt register below 10-15mph,

it does affect the power steering and gearchanges in an autobox because of the incorrect signal being sent to the ecu's.

The best way forward is to get yourself a set of UK clocks and get your ecu remapped.

Having the ecu remapped will remove the rev limiter and the speed restrictor.

It would be dry joints on the pcb board at the back of the speedo clock if you had intermittent readings, the problems you describe are definitley connected to the delimiter box wired to the speedo.

thanks for that.

i understand that my ecu has already been remapped to a later spec or something like that. what would happen if i used uk clocks with my jap ecu.

would it be a good time to change over to a uk spec manual ecu or would the loom not fit?

if your ecu has already been remapped then uk clocks will work fine and should read correctly. You dont need to change to a uk spec ecu. The autobox has its own ecu which would not be used when converting to manual. You dont need to remove it, it just wont send any info to the ecu.

A couple of wiring differences from the autobox to manual, but nothing needs doing at the ecu end.

thanks for the link.

i have read through it a few times. i am still not sure if they use the manual box loom which i think includes the alternator wiring. i am probobly going to go that way as it makes the install a little neater and i intend to replace the engine loom with a new manual loom eventually.

have you experience on an auto-manual conversion?

many thanks

Getting mine done soon, i have all the parts, just need a spare few days, if you look in the faq section under transmission, there is a post on auto to manual conversion, should give you the info you need.

I think you can use the autobox loom, its the starter motor that is different, i think the alternator remains the same, but i will have to have another read myself lol
