gonna start clearing the garage this weekend followed by cleaning the car and waxing it then storing it.

I will then start following the engine removal guide on this site.

my only gripe is the lack of space i have.

i was thinking of reversing the car in the garage (single) so it is a bit tight but i have access to the front of the car. When it comes to removing the engine do i need to have the car raised?

i was thinking of disconnecting everything then rolling car forward when it comes to removing the engine.

my only problem is i will be declaring it SORN until it goes back on the road. do you think i will get away with pulling it out of the garage for one day to remove engine then pushing car back in?

i will be buying a Metal shed big enough to fit the engine in and myself around it to work on.

also.. i have aftermarket suspension so will i need to keep it raised the entire length that the car is off road? reason i ask as it might be a year and a half till it is back on road and dont want suspension to bugger up.

cheers for any feedback

Hi mate, pretty sure that you will need to raise the car. You will need to remove the gearbox before you can lift the engine.

Best of luck with it and keep us updated :)

will do :-)

can anyone else also advise wether i can remove gearbox with car up on stands?

i dont have a ramp and so wondering what would be the best way to remove gearbox first then engine when i get round to hiring a engine hoist for a day.

i have also been told a seat belt makes a very good strap when pulling the engine?

Stands will be fine mate, you need to lower the gearbox a bit to get at the top bolts (3x10" extension bars are very handy for this). I did mine with the car on ramps front and rear and there is (just) enough room. Stands will be roughly the same height so should be fine.

ok so best thing is to leave can on the wheels in the garage.

unbolt and remove all parts i need to, drain fluids etc.

then once its all done hire engine pulley.

roll car outside (garage roof low) place on jack stands. Drop gearbox underneath

then start removing engine half way out and remove then rest of the plumbing.

then remove engine and place on stand. and take car of stands, roll back into garage and then thats that.

that ok?

i know im not clear but i am trying to see how i do it with hardly any room in the garage.

cheers for all your help :)

Do you mean you took the engine apart with it still in bay? If so then that sounds cool. Considering the time I have I can do it whatever way :)

ok well i can see alot of members saying "take it all out" but i am in no rush and this way will enable me to do it all myself :-)

i will get a move on starting this job asap and take pictures as i go through the year

may i ask though.. i want to change auto box to manual at some point before going back on the road.

is it possible to do this method but with getting the auto box out?

i imagine it would be easier to take box off first so i can sell and put towards funds :-) then get to stripping the engine

  • Author

i will try your way then until i am left with the box.. then hopefully i can climb in engine bay and pass box over to a helping hand

thanks again matey. will get pictures of the whole progress and (hopefully) write what i do so others can do it this way (should they choose to)

just another question...

what kind of cheap but effective material can i use to place on the garage floor to stop the damp rising from the concrete?

cheers

Will do mate once i get everything back together, the new loom is excellent quality and despite some peoples opinions, has every connection as far as i can see. Gonna get my injectors sonically cleaned if they`re all working ok. got all the stuff to get started now, have removed dash n boxes gotta check matrix but think i`ll replace with a primera as a preventative measure as cash is tight. Got parts coming out me ears!
