Howdy, names Martin, from Cork in Ireland, but moved to Christchurch in New Zealand just last month.

Just bought a 300ZX NA, looking at them for a while and while I wanted a TT the funds didnt allow it. Loved them for ages, think the looks are pure 90's Jap supercar. And even though she's na and auto (yes I know auto :)) I couldnt pass her up. Bit of minor bodywork to be done but the interior is spotless and the engine bay is clean and runs nicely. Not used to driving RWD 3.0L cars as I have an FTO GPX in Ireland, even though the horsepower is similar the RWD does make a difference when used to FWD!

I have a pure newbie question, while I know my other car inside out and back to front I am sort of puzzled (and impressed) by the amount of controls and gadgets a car this age has! Does anyone know where I can find a diagram that explains all the controls, cant find it anywhere on the net! Plus I'm sure this has often been asked, but what does the 'power', 'hold', 'auto' button do!!??

Thanks, and sorry for the long first post!

Welcome to the club mate , sounds like you got a nice z there, would like to see some pics !! (i'm a n/a auto man to lol)

there's loads of info on here as regards poss issues you may be having and general info , never come across a general gadgets list though , but have a search you never know!

as regards the auto /power / hold

it’s to do with the gear ratio's

power mode speaks for it self i think ;)

auto - will recognise what you do with accel and if you accel hard will place you in power mode , hold keeps the car in the lower gears longer i believe , i leave mine in auto mode then as said it will change to power mode as and when needed

am sure I will be corrected on this if I’m slightly off

oh and take it has over drive and cc?

Chris :D

Cheers lads. I'll put up pics when I get a chance to take my own in the light of day! And after she gets a good clean, all I have are pics that were on the net when I saw her first, shes all stock at present though, but it does have the 'Z' symbol on the front instead of 'Nissan' which I think is a nice touch, didnt think it would have that.

Like I said the body needs a bit of minor work with a couple of scrapes, some rubbing marks, and one broken rear reflector, the targa top is a bit faded from the sun, and a bit of the black is peeling around the windscreen I think. But I'm delighted with it, for the price of roughly £1000 I couldnt pass it up! First thing will be belts and service, just to be safe!

Thanks for the explanation on the power hold auto thing, I was thinkign it was that but it sort of had me confused and tempted to press all sorts of buttons!! It has the overdrive and cc as well ya, again, pure newbie I am, whats the overdrive feature about? :)

All standard issues you have there , broken rear reflector , worn windscreen /scuttle panels etc. As regards the z badge on the front jap models where all badged as (z) , uk where badged as Nissan

yeah up to you in the power /auto mode

i leave mine in auto mode with overdrive on for (non)town driving , and flick o/d off if i remember lol , for slower town driving it aid's with engine braking and theoretically fuel economy

although i know some as above who leave in power or hold as a perm thing up to you really i suppose but always found it easier to leave in auto mode and let the car do it more fun :D

as regards belts etc got my full n/a service belt pack

(alt/air con/pas belts) for just over £30.00 from danny At DtA motor sport (see trader's section )

and an easy change over also

Oh and look forward to the pics

Nice one Chris, thanks for that. I'll check him out for parts and stuff, though shipping to here could be a bit pricey but I'll look into it regardless.

I think I'll have a lot of experimenting to do with the setups but thats the joys of it, and its a great excuse to take it for a drive again!!

Might even find the aerial switch while I'm messing around who knows!! Took me long enough how to figure to get the key out of the ignition (it was dark and didnt know there was a little button there!!) so this could take a while! :)

lol , its a learning curve i'll admit that , and fair point on the parts , think there's an Oz forum also , so may be worth looking on there,

Oh and as regards the Ariel mine rises and retract's automatically upon tuner selection on the radio! , i'm, presuming as it’s a jdm n/a auto , should be the same so may need looking at:cool:

Might turn on my radio so and see if that works! Might help. Thanks again for the help.

no worries mate, oh and finger's crossed ;)

welcome to the club martin, we even have an ireland section on here should you get homesick, hope all is going well for you out there

Thanks all, hoping to have a good look at her tomorrow in more detail when its bright, (its winter over here so the evenings get dark too quick!), and giving her a good wash and then taking the hills for a nice little relaxed drive along the coast! :)

One thing I will need to do is respray the targas, the colour part obviously, its very faded and I have suspicions they are off a different car as no other part of the car is as faded, I know the roof fades more but these are really dull. My bumpers as well need a bit of touching up as there is a pretty deep mark on the rear, and some scratches along the bottom of the front one, prob from parking too close to a kerb head on I reckon. Anyone got a colour code for the red Z's? Appreciate it if you do. Thanks.
