Well i've taken a week off work to finish off the V8 so here's what i've achieved today:

Started off by fit all the pistons and conrods and grinding every cylinder to fit for clearance. It took about 4 hours but i got there in the end.

All pistons in:

Timing chain on and cam degreed ready to test the clearance and amazingly the conrods clear the cam on every stroke, i'm so relieved!!!

Conrods all attached to the crank finally:

Now to test the clearance of the waterpump on the timing cover eek, works just fine with a bit of fiddling:

Head number one in place and test bolted down:

Both heads on now to test fit the alternator and serpentine belt pulley:

Harmonic damper and bottom pulley in place:

Test fit of the belt, still missing the power steering pump but gives you an idea of the fitment:

Distributor in place but more to do tomorrow, more photos to follow tomorrow night.

Day one over with and made huge amounts of progress :) Can't wait, end of the dry build finishes tomorrow then it's to be stripped down to the bare block and cleaned thoroughly ready to transport over to my house in lutterworth and drop it in the car:

COOL..........Love threads starting like this, nice to see it all evolve, all nice and new and shinny...its going to be a beast, :duffer:

Keep em coming mate

Good luck with the project, hope you've a time budget of an extra day for all the 'little' jobs that crop up! Will be greay when it's done.

Looks great mate. Would love to rebuild an engine myself in the future. How on earth do you learn how to do it!?

WOW :D I love V8s... had a '72 Dodge last year and boy did it piss the neighbours off, the noise of them is awesome and I'd love that in a 300zx! Can't wait to see it finished!!

Cheers guys, the only setback i have is that i'm missing a spirolock in one of the pistons. I damaged it and real steel don't stock them. The only dealer of these pistons is in yorkshire so tuesday i'll find out if they have them in stock or not and that could halt the whole build but fingers crossed everything should go okay.

£40 in petrol to drive up to yorkshire and back for a £2.50 part :headvswal

Just reading and watching videos mainly, the engine is suprisingly simple to build it's a bit like mechano. The pistons go together quite easily, the blocks a good one so plenty of meat on it then it's just been a case of carrying on from there. The hard part is going to be the fitting of the gearbox as the engine goes in (probably thursday/friday)

Hopefully i've kept 2 days free for "emergencies" lol

I'll be off outside cleaning the block in a minute. I'll post up some piccies later guys :D

lol, it depends on the fact my compressor's died, the place i was going to be working is now looking very unlikely and i still haven't got an engine hoist and even if i did where the car is without being transported i don't know if it'll be possible to use an engine hoist on the gravel driveway :(

Fingers crossed i'll pull it out the bag!
