Just thought I would say hi as a new joiner, I currently run a modified 200sx s14a, and a 2.2 vtec JDM prelude, but am considering changing the 200 for a manual TT 300zx..

wondered if anyone had comparisons / advice on what to look for on 300's?

Many thanks in advance..

Si

Welcome to the club buddy, well it depends what you want out of a 300.

If it's a comfortable, quick, long distance cruiser that can still hustle on the country roads then a 2+2 (the most common) is what you'll want.

If it's something a bit tighter, lighter and more sports orientated then I would opt for a 2 seater "SWB" (short wheel base). There's the option of the targa top or rarer "slicktop" lighter zed. The slicktop is the choice of those wanting a sports car out of the zed.

You can tell the difference by the petrol cap being "in front" of the rear wheel instead of behind it and a slightly more squat look.

Hello and welcome :)

Hi, and thanks for the welcomes, rapid responses already!

What are the benefits for example, of the slicktop over the standard Zed? Is it due to better chassis and lighter? I was tempted by a targa, and again wondered what price differences / spec differences there are?

slicktop will feel tighter, but ive heard that the long wheel base is best for handling, dont quote me on that though ive been known to be wrong on quite a few occasions lol

I'm quoting you on that  It's true in some ways the slicktop is tighter and best for handling but it is much twichier than the lwb. At least with the LWB you have a little warning before you end up in a ditch :D

The slicktop is stiffer thanks to the metal roof and the weight is lower down in the car so it's a little less rolly poly.

The V8 i'm building is a swb targa so hopefully stiffer than the lwb but with the advantage of the lighter cabin and the ability to have the roof out. A bit of a compromise between the two

lol, i'm only going from general opinion on these things. This is the first slicktop i've owned and i haven't even driven it yet

Welcome. Unless your looking to put the car to use in some serious track action then I would just get whatever version you can find the best example of for your budget. The Slicktop is a bit of a hardcore enthusiasts option and very rare, nearly all Z's are Targa models anyway.

Most common variant is the 2+2, but if you have no need for the rear seats then I would personally opt for the Shortie.

They are all Good though

LWB handling feels heavy and lazy in comparison to the slicktop, but that does make it easier to control on the limit...such as for drifting.
