my engine has started to knock, i have tried changing the oil and so on, bt ive had it to my bro in law (senior technician at renault garage) and he thinks it could be bottom end, possibly shells (if im lucky lol), if i rev the engine you get the knok, hold the revs and it goes, also i get a slight tapping knock starting at 2500-3000 rpm, when we were checking the engine he removed the coilpack and it stopped knocking, put it back on and it started again, he says he is just taking away the pressure so as its not firing, only did this with one coil pack

what are my options, do you think it could be just bottom end shells????, if so anyone got any linkson how to do, is it an engine out job

could it be piston slap, which would mean a new engine fitted, what are the prices of this option, just supply engine, have one suplied and fitted

sell the car cheaper with damaged engien, not really an option as i would like to get as much for the car as i can, what would it be worth (dont be cheeky lol)

let me know guys

here is a vid of noise

bugger, have changed my oil twice in the last month lol, just changed the oil last nite pmsl

sounds like my vectra did when the oil pump went. Whats the pressure guage reading Allan??

That does sound like a big end knock im afraid bud.Pulling the coil pack off will as your mate says take the load off the piston and reduce the noise.Im not tyring to put a damper on things mate but the shells might not cure it.The crank may be damaged and the con rods can go oval from the hammering its get banging around on the crank journal.fingers crossed you may get away with the shells. If the journal has gone blue at the edges and has scoring that you can feel with your thumbnail then it probaly needs grinding. If it just has mild scoring then you can clean up the journals with some 180 grit emery cloth kept wet with wd40.Keep going till the scoring cleans up.As a final test run a 2p coin over the journal,if it leaves copper behind then the journal needs further sanding or is maybe to far gone.Any mild marks will come out using the emery.

Dont buy shells till the old ones are out unless your sure its never had a crank grind before .I think factory shells have std stamped on them somewhere .If its been ground before youl need oversize shells .ACL are a very good replacement shell made in australia same sort of money as nissan ones as well.

any update on the bottom end? did you manage to check the crank? newbie here, just trying to find out as much on the VG30 before i commit to purchasing one. Can the sump be removed while the engine is still in? I managed to replace a full set of bearings once on an S13 200sx with the sump just twisted to the side and that took me near enough 7 hrs!

He sold the car to CraigTT, I'm pretty sure he's having the engined rebuilt.

I bought the car from him still knocking mate. And.................Its still knocking, actually abit worse as i had to drive it home.

Im actually going for a rebuild on it this time off.

Cheers

That's good to know. That's my only concern with the Z32 really, working on the engine and turbos as all my other Nissans are pretty straight forward and have ample room under the bonnet to work on. Can the turbos actually be removed while the engine is still in? or is it always a engine out procedure?

I've always loved the Z cars since I was a lil kid - growing up it was just the most awesome styled vehicle and even to this day I think it still is.

Sorry, after typing away I realise I should have really just started another thread! my apologies.

The Turbo's can be removed without the eng being removed, its just easier to do with engine out

there's a few threads floating around on the matter 2

Good stuff there

Just make sure its an old old copper 2p as later ones are steel and might cause scratches.
