This isn't a rant at police (I am one of those guys who has praise for them!), but completely the opposite, but it still scared me, as to why; well I'll tell you.

Left home for Solihull this afternoon at about 4pm. Heavy rain, pulled onto the motorway, wacked on cruise control and sat back. Everything was going quite slowly due to the rain. I guess I was doing about 65mph. Overtook a police car that was going extremely slowly. Pulled back into the nearside line and didn't think anything of it.

Looked back and saw the car accelerate and catch me back up again. "I've not done anything wrong" I thought...as most innocent drivers probably do. Within those few seconds of thinking that, all the blues and twos came on. I instantly indicated and pulled into the hard shoulder. Within seconds another car swerved in front of me blocking me in. Two guys got out and ran over to the car shouting turn the engine off and give us your keys NOW. Scared shitless and not knowing what was going on, I did exactly as I said. Two more police cars also pulled infront and behind.

I was shouted at to GET OUT OF THE CAR (via passenger side)....not being told what was going on, I was 'taken' to the police car at the back of my car by my arm. Sat in the back of this car and being asked questions of where I was at such and such time, where I'd been, was the car mine etc. They then told me that my car (the Leon) had been identified as being involved in a really serious robbery. I was asked where I lived and where I was going. I gave them all my details.

They then radioed through to verify who I was who I said I was. Then, to my worst fears, it came back as a negative ID! I was like, 'this must be a joke surely'. I was then asked if I had a criminal record or had been arrested. I immediately said no and that my drivers' licence was brand new and just been issued. So they asked where it was and two more coppers went over to my car and went through it. Pulled out my drivers' licence which luckily I only received that morning my mail (moved house/changed address etc) as I think I would probably have been cuffed and take off to the police station for interview!!

The whole thing scared the crap out of. I've not got a criminal record of any kind and have never been arrested, so it was a complete experience to me. There were loads and loads of other police cars all flying up and down both sides of the motorway in addition to the 4 that were with me. Apparently, this was ALL because they were there for support! God knows how much that cost them. Never seen so many police cars in one place other than on the TV. It was just like a scene from Police Camera Action as well! I did asked if I was being filmed and they said ‘alas not’. lol

The police, I thought were very professional and whilst it did cause me a delay and shook me right up, I say good luck to them. They got the wrong guy, but they were damn well trying! I wasn't miss-treated or anything, I was completely straight with them and answered all their questions without hesitation or agro. They did say at the end 'thanks for being so co-operative and we are sorry that this happened'. They then gave me the full reasons as to why they had me as a suspect (which they didn't have to do).

It was actually the car that was more the suspect than me. A few hours previously, a serious robbery had occurred in Wellington (a small town about 20 mins south of me). Two cars were supposed to have been involved. A champagne coloured Laguna and a black 56 plate Seat Leon.....rewind back to before joining the motorway, I remember seeing a champagne coloured Laguna going into the services, it was exiting the roundabout and I pulled in beind it. I remember seeing this car as it was loaded with guys and only had one windscreen wiper working. Didn't think much more of it. But, at that point in time, an undercover cop car that was involved in the case had seen me follow him round the roundabout and followed me (unbeknown to me at the time) and cars had been sent to get the guys in the Laguna. I was just in the wrong place at the right time and the police even said that they'd thought all their Christmases had come at once when they saw me and this Laguna together! I did kinda feel a little gutted for them at that point!

They said that in situations, the criminals have high powered cars. I said, 'That is NOT high powered, it's the dowdy 1.9'. The one they were after by the sounds of it was the 170bhp 'FR' model. Because mine is a sport model with all the options (big wheels, spoiler etc) they miss-took it and acted on instinct and the circumstantial evidence that they saw. Was very well executed I thought.

Oh well, left me rather shaken to say the least. The sort of thing you see on TV. A proper sting operation! I must have looked like such a crim being taken to the back of a cop car! Just hope nobody I know saw me!
