My zed is down at D2 for some serious TLC (much welding, amongst other things), and Darren has told me that all its shocks need replacing :(

So, I've done a quick search on the site for previous discussions on the matter, and I still think I'd like your input.

Basically, I've got a stock 93 UK LWB TT. I'm not into massively modding it up, more interested in restoration, but I'm not against minor improvements in handling (and power - but that's a thread for another day).

The question is: do I fit stock shocks (cheap option) or do i spring for something else, and if so, what do i go for?

KYB AGX with Eibach Springs.

Excellent upgrade over stock and cheaper than stock Shocks and springs !

could I keep the current springs with the KYB shocks? I'm not sure I want the car lowered - it's already grounding when I go over the speedbumps near my house! Although I suppose that could have something to do with the knackered shocks.

And where's a good place to get this kit from? Smithy's is asking £460 just for the KYBs which looks a little expensive?

Sounds to me like your current springs are sagging (if they are the originals then they are way past there usable lifespan by now anyway).

The Eibachs only lower by 0.8", its a very mild drop, cars with Eibachs should not ground out on speedbumps at all.

Try Z1morosports or conceptzperformance

Yup Legrath is spot on, you will find your old springs are shat now and the ride higt is lower than a new setup of Eibachs will send it. I'd go with KYG shocks too.

^^ dont even think about fitting coilovers with those spring rates though , and thats the trouble with coilovers in general for the average Z owners who is looking for a mild upgrade but does'nt want to to track his car.....the spring rates are just way too high.

stock spring rates are around 2-3 kg/mm.

Eibachs are around 3-4 kg/mm (but are progressive wound to soak up small bumps)

The coilovers above are 12 kg/mm on the front !

Most coilovers use spring rates around 6-8 kg/mm

You can however get custom spring rates made for coilovers.

Are there any advantages to coilovers for me considering that the car will probably never get nearer to a track than the car park?

TMTTP, thanks for the links - i'm chasing shipping costs already :)

Not a single one mate, in fact if you pay for coilovers a similar price to what Legrath is proposing you should get, you'll get the crappiest ones.

But in short, they can be a very harsh ride.

KYB's and Eibachs is by far THE most common suspension upgrade on a Zed going :)

just waiting for some of the stock to arrive at Dan's front door ;)

Any idea when that might be? I'd be interested in a set from him if it saves me time getting them shipped from the guys on fleabay.

Legrath is spot on. I have a set of coilovers on mine, and the ride is very stiff. Brilliant on quality roads with sweeping bends, but not comfortable at all on the normal roads.

Don't you need adjustable cambers when you lower the car?

Yeah you should do really, or you'll be ripping through tyres in weeks instead of months.
