Selling my car without personal number plate?

I put my Mercedes up for sale and have had a lot of interest in it, I have stated that the sale does not include the number plate.

 

If someone was to come along and purchase the car what do I have to do to make sure I do not loose my number plate?

 

Or is the only way to actually have it put onto retention throught the DVLA?

    You must either put it on retention or transfer it to another car owned by you before, you sell the donor car.
