Guys,

When you get your exhaust gutted or De-catted etc. Do you have any problems getting the car through the MOT? Especially if you have completely different setups running aswell with diff ECU's/chips etc.?

I've had no problem with mine - the legal position is that it shouldn't pass. If it's pre the change in cat rules (can't remember exactly when but some time in 1991 I think) then most will pass it.

As for chips, I doubt that most would change mapping at anything less than 75% throttle / air flow and so they're unlikely to impact MoT tests - but I stand to be corrected on this - any alternative opinions ?

I have 1992 UK Z with NO CATS!!

It passed MOT in Febuary ok.

I have the car MOT through SE, but they just take the car to a local MOT place.

Eddie hi,

I want to de-cat, did you do yours yourself!

I have full enginnering workshop facilities at hand. But lack instructions! Im thinking of making an overslieve section of pipe to slide back on remaining pipes when the cat is cut out! Any good or lost cause!

harve.

Harve,

SE did all the work. I had the pre-cat replaced and front pipes as one job.

Check out www.twinturbo.net as they have a tech on gutting pre-cats. Or just ask questions they seem to have a lot of experience in the exhaust section.

Be warned that running without cats can cause turbo oil seal to fail because of less back-pressure.

Mine has not suffered from this but I don't know if SE replaced turbo seals as part of the job. I have done about 10k since job and all is ok.

Without CATS my car spools turbos up quicker, flooring it I run around 5psi @ 2500 rpm which is not bad but my pre-cat was blocked anyway so the car was pants which is why I had the bypass.

If you can sus this out I can see a nice earner for you in aftermarket pipes ;-)

Eddie.

PS: Hows your alarm situation going, is it concrete boots time for the alarm guy?

Anothing thing to wotch out with cats, is when they spend the night in your car and claw all the leather to shreads by the morning :-(

Hi,

My 1990 NA has been de-catted, and had a full s/steel system fitted. It just passed the MOT the other day....with no emissions problems.

Eddie,

I think the rules changed sometime in 1992, is your car registered after the change in the law?

How much did the pipes cost from SE?

Mine is a series 2 car as well; was the extra modification to remove the pre-cat expensive?

Cheers,

Dave

I think the cut off date is after 1st Aug 1992. I dont know if this includes 1st Aug 1992 when mine was first reg. Also I think if you have big diameter pipes the emission sensors used by the testers have a tougher job getting a true reading as the gas is already less dense etc than ith normal tailpipes at any rpm due to the big diameter for good gasflow.

Dave W,

Pre-cat was £118.67 inc vat

I was charged £58.43 for a replacement of turbo exhaust housing, dunno wot that is but it was done.

Charged £15.95 for a gasket manifold, dunno which one, probably turbo oil seal with any luck as it doesn't leak.

As for the leagle stuff, my car was registered 23-12-1992 so it could be iffy it could be not. It passed the mot so I ain't complaining, in fact my Z was the first second hand car I have owned that as passed without parting with extra cash for repair.

Dave, I should have taken your car for a spin at april 1st meet, then I could have given you my opinion on the difference.

The whole job was £603. This includes what was mentioned above and includes the replacement of front pipes as well. Pete also does his usual test-drive to make sure all is well. I was despirate to get my Z a bit quicker.

See ya

Eddie ;-)
