Common problem, but could still be a faulty valve, so a leak down test is needed now to be sure.

To do the test at home is a little awkward.Youll need a compressor and some sort of adaptor so you can blow air into the cylinder and keep it under pressure.the cylinder must be at tdc on its compression stroke so both valves are closed. If you get air leaking out both valves you be on tdc between the intake and exhaust strokes. You should remove the dipstick and rad cap so you can check for escaping air.Keep the throttle plates open also.If you can hear air out the dipstick tube, your rings are leaking,if you get bubbles in your coolant its the headgasket,if you have air escaping out the exhaust its the exhaust valve and if the air comes out the plenum its the inlet valve.Expect some air to escape out the dipstick as the engine is 20 years old but just compare it to one of your good cylinders.if you dont want to do this, add a teaspoon of oil to the low cylinder. If the reading comes up like the others the chances are its the bore/piston if it stays around the same its a valve.

cheers jimmer

the compresion tester i have uses the same clip as i use on my air tools so i should be able to pressurise the clyinder with out to many problems :hyper:

Good luck with it chap.I dont want to put a damper on things but valve trouble on zeds is not as common as ring/bore failure. If cost is a major issue then get a good s/hand tested engine for your car.

yea ive had some quotes already will proberly break it for parts or swap it with someone :)

yea i can do it my self not a problem but the head gasket set is £200 so i think its time to say bye bye to the zed :(

ahhh not so bad then really still i want summit else now :)

imo i would get jimmer to rebuild your engine, he is doing mine at the mo, and sending pics to me how its going. getting a second hand engine is a bit hit or miss. get a rebuild, then you know exactly what you are getting for your money, and you know it will last.
