ok i need to find out the colour code of my paint job but the guys that painted it back in Nov 05 have shut down and moved on. they described it as 'mazda atlantic blue', but that colour appears not to exist :headvswal

ive put up a few pics of the Z on a Mazda forum, and the first reply I've had is that it could be 'winning blue'. ive done a search of winning blue motors - do you reckon this is my colour?

Go to a motor factor and ask to see the colour chips for Mazda blue to match it against your car, some top bodyshops might have a magic eye that will match the paint as well, but would charge you for using it I guess.

Go to Halfrauds (horrid place) they have the sheets with all the colour codes, go to the Mazda 2005 page have a look at all the blues take it and match it to your car! i did the same with mine when getting some paint found mine within 5mins!

Take your petrol filler cap into any paint supplier (inc halfords) and get them match it.

If your using a bodyshop they will also do the same to get the correct color match

thanks for the replies fellas. thanks Dave, i might pop along tomorrow depending on whether i get my spacers on (dont want to move the car as there's the lovely smell of hot rubbing tyre at the moment! :nono: ) failing that i might pop into 'frauds and try to get a colour chip or something, might look at their meshing too (and some neons while im there :x: :nono: :slap: )

most decent paint/body shops should have a paint scanner that analysis the pigments and can tell you what colour is

b***er! :( i went to Robinson's Mazda like Dave suggested and although the chap there was helpful, he didnt recognise the colour Atlantic Blue. We put my petrol flap up against a 'Winning Blue' RX-8 and there is a slight difference. the sun came out at the time so we got a good look, and the winning blue (as in the mazda pics above) is a slightly richer blue (a tiptoe towards bayside blue), whereas mine is slightly lighter and has a hint of aquamarine.

so took my flap to halfords and they dug out their mazda colours, and no luck there either. i did notice however that there's a light blue called lagoon blue, and to my expert (lol) knowledge of paint, perhaps a mixture of winning blue with a hint of lagoon blue would give me my colour. maybe the bodyshop nicknamed it atlantic blue themselves...

do you think a decent paint analyser would be clever enough to pick up if a colour is actually a blend of more than one colour paint?

i might go through yellow pages again to scout out a decent local bodyshop but it'll have to wait till next week - ive just moved two of my dad's freezers, and in an hour or so i'm off to have my spacers put on!

The paint place i always use for my cars, always tell me to match off something metal rather than plastic as there are slight differences. Not saying that is your problem but it may be a contributing factor.

A lot depends on who mixed the paint on your origional respray and wether they got it right, if not then your never going to get an exact match, if that was the case using a magic eye (paint scanner) would be the best bet, when I worked for ICI there were people that could do it by eye but they had years and years of experience.

Hi SuffolkZX.

Its a small world,my uncle worked for ICI,he is based in Stowmarket.

Another note, with metallic paint it depends what angle it's put on at to the final finish (i.e. if you sprayed the side of the car and then did the door separately but the door was hung at 90 degrees whilst spraying it would have a different effect). So (phew) if you put the swatches up against the flap at the wrong angle it would've had misleading results (it's because if the angles of the metal and what it's reflecting).
