Is there a guide for removing the cylinder heads? I've removed the cam covers, just need to know what order to loosen the head bolts.

Also does the lower intake manifold need to be removed before the heads are removed?

Thanks,

Ant

No, It is getting done by Custom exotics. But I am trying to get as much as possible done before they start. I'm hoping to learn about it by doing as much as I can myself. It's at theirs at the moment and I am popping down there when I get a spare few hours to do bits.

I recommend you get them to do everything and get another engine to rebuild.

The reason for this is they want to know where everything is when the disassemble it, so they can put it back in the necessary order, if there is a problem with a component then they know where the problem is?

Also if there is a problem with the engine then they have a comeback saying it is something you did to the engine as opposed to leaving them to do everything!

Lower inlet manifold does need to be removed. I think you need to remove the L/H side exhaust manifold too because of the dipstick.

I made a special tool to undo the headbolts, it was a 1/2" drive 10mm impact driver (full hex) and a short piece of 10mm allen key. You can then get a decent breaker bar on it and it's slim enough to fit down without removing camshafts.

dont forget those 2 10mm one on each head tucked away that are a pig to get to, we took engine out in the end.

They are friends of mine and know there won't be any problems. So there won't be any come back ;)

If they weren't doing the engine and someone else was, I wouldn't have touched it.

Thanks for the advice though.

you will need to remove the lower intake. just a few bolts nothing majour. and there isent any order to undo the heads just when putting them back on m8.

So I just do 1/4 turn on all bolts in any order and repeat the process in the same order, 1/4 turn until there all undone?

Thanks,

alloy heads should not just be undone as this can warp them. You should undo them starting from the outside and work inwards the opposite of when you tighten them.

Completely agree, they are tightened and released in the same pattern which is roughly criss cross, get the online service manual and print off some pages :)

I take it you will be checking the heads with a flat edge and most prob gonna skim them so dont worry to much when pulling the bolts out .The engine is out so its cold dead and as long as you get them all undone in one hit there wont be any warping however you undo them.

But if you are not sure what you should be doing .

Good advise is leave it to the pro's .

Thanks Jimmer.

Ok, that's why I'm checking. I thought they were alloy heads, just weren't sure if there was any specific order for undoing.

So if I do 1/4 turn following this diagram going in reverse order 8,7,6 etc?

Thanks,
