There are some utter c*n*s out there.

Been on Ebay a fair bit recently in between being ghey and ill, trying to sort out a few things for my home studio.

Went on again just half an hour after pausing for dinner and my account was locked and I had a letter in my email saying it had been compromised. In that half an hour someone had apparently used a brute force password generator, gained access to my account and used it to send unsolicited spam email to God knows how many people.

My first reaction was to panic unreservedly as I had visions of them gaining access to my Credit Cards but apparently they're held on a different server. To make matters worse Ebay kept "timing out" every time I tried to follow procedure to reactivate, even when I only took about 10 seconds. I eventually got permanently locked out due to the amount of times I tried and was only able to rectify the situayion by contacting Ebay directly through their "Live Chat" service which I can now heartily recommend if somehing like this happens to anyone else.

Now having to contact all those I'd sent messages to immediately prior to the hack as Ebay has contacted them telling them not to deal with my account plus I'm having to change my email account passwords as they could've got into those as well apparently.

Annoying isn't the word  :(

This also happened to my sister - freaked her out! :(

She also went thru the live chat thing and sorted everything out - so would also recommend that :)

Hope you get everything back on track mate!

Happens all the time to my account, really dont care lol

I am the complete opposite being more than a little paranoid about security, tracking etc. For example, I usually run TOR, Privoxy and Peer Guardian 2 but as my computer is currently sh@gged I've reduced it to just the latter and now feel rather unprotected.

If I was a "heavy" Ebay user with lots of auctions running when it happened I'd sure as sh1t care as Ebay automatically cancels the auctions and contacts everyone you've contacted telling them not to deal with you...

Checked my ebay account once just out of chance and some chinese bumhole had listed about 20 nintendos Wiis on my account and changed the paypal account to my ebay name but .cc not .com!

I had 170 quid of listing fees which got refunded after using the live chat and I have added numbers etc onto my password to stop it happening again.

This only just happened to me last week.got home to find an e mail from e bay saying my account was hacked and a load of listings in my name were cancelled.Got the fees back but had to change my password.Im not great with computers so have no idea how people can access your account without knowing your password ??.Id used numbers and letters too.Anyone know how this is done .

Awww that sucks friday :(

It sucks every day of the week!!!:wack:

Seriously though, i had it happen to me both as a buyer and a seller someone hacked into my account and listed items for sale, i also bought a 160gb Ipod for my dads birthday and paid immediately then got an email 30 mins later telling me not to pay as the guys account had been hacked and it wasn't his listing. Its funny how it was a 30 day listing and he knew nothing about it but 30 mins after i paid he contacts ebay to say his account is hacked.

i use numbers and shift numbers too... makes it near on impossibe to hack...

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Your confusing hacking with guessing ;)

Every password i use contains numbers :D

Which numbers, also what letters? Trying to think of a good password ;) LOL

When you think of a good password tell us LOL!!!

g3tb3nt - hows that one fellas

people hack acount by using a random generator that tries every possible combination for your password, takes about 2 days for it to go through all possibilities. but if u add numbers etc they will give up easier as need to run it for longer etc so will ove on to the next person.

your best bet is to NOT replace letters characters with the known numbers

i.e.

3 = e for g3tb3nt :) - This is because on a dictionary attack a lot of these are substitued already.

As daft as it sound to remember a password use a phrase and use the first or last letters.

obviously using upper case will help too

i.e.

snow white and the 7 dwarves = SW&t7d

I also add underscores and & symbols for an extra measure

try to think of something that would go over 8 characters too as these generally take longer to hack. Dont use the same passwords for your paypal account as your ebay account.

Also log-on securely, this encrypts the password being sent - so if your logging in from work its not in plain text on the proxy server.

Also make sure you dont save passwords or have them cached on your machine (again more applicable from work than home), as a lot of these are very easily retrievable by accessing one file in your user profile.
